I've been waiting for years for Madisen's poetry to be tangible, in a way I will always remember long after social media fades. I am so glad she has come so far in her life and I am so glad Eighteen Years is a part of mine. It'll always be something to carry me through every rough situation and I am thankful I have the privilege to keep this book with me for the rest of my life.

I'm in love with this book

I received this book as a Christmas gift & it's hands down the absolute the best gift I got. I finished it in one reading because I simply could not put it down. The way the poems were written & the lessons I learned really hit home. My heart went through happiness while reading, but it also ached. Many tears were shed over this reading, but I plan to read it again and again and again. This is officially my favorite book & hope for many more written by her.

Poems about heart break(specifically helpful to me right now), the future, falling in love, and so much more. Very inspiring to see her publish her first book after being a fan for a couple of years. Good Piece of Information About a Great Movie

This book is a good guide to one of the most interesting movies of our time. This book not only gives the reader some background material about how it came to be, but it also has the script of the movie included for you to read. Even though there was no real script when the film was made, the editor of the book was able to break down the movie shot by shot and give the reader some sort of continuity script. The end of the book is filled with interviews and reviews of the film.
I think this book is a very good tool for those interested in the movie "Breathless" because it helps you understand not only the movie a little better, but the method behind Jean-Luc Goddard's madness. I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to learn more about this innovative and extremely interesting piece of film!

Informative description of Godard's classic French New Wave film

Published in 1987 in the Rutgers Films in Print series, this book by Dudley Andrew is an ample introduction to Jean-Luc Godard's classic 1959 film A BOUT DE SOUFFLE (Breathless). Andrew has written an introductory essay and collected interviews, reviews and commentaries from French and US publications of the early Sixties. There's also Fran�ois Truffaut's three-page treatment that Godard transformed into this, his first feature film. The largest portion of the book is a continuity script that Andrew produced from the film print, ignoring the subtitles and translating the spoken French dialogue. into English.

While A BOUT DE SOUFFLE (Breathless) is no opaque intellectual film that requires some special education to follow and enjoy, Andrew's book will prove informative to those wanting a greater appreciation of the script and the film's reception. English subtitles, even on recent releases like the Criterion Collection's, necessarily make compromises and leave some of the dialogue untranslated. Andrew's continuity script gives readers the film's full dialogue and occasionally points out instances of the late 1950s slang employed by character Michael Poiccard. The reason for the film's great impact is less easy to understand today, after the film's innovations have become an everyday part of filmmaking, but the contemporary reviews show what particular details shocked the first filmgoers to see Godard's work.

Only the lack of the original French dialogue (which could have been presented facing-page) and the scant commentary (as opposed to the many reviews) keep this good book from being a great one. However, those who loved Godard's work and want to read more about it will find Andrew's treatment highly informative.

About the Author
Michael Winninger from St. Valentin ihas been occupied since his childhood with this topic. He grew up close to the Nibleungenwerk and some of his family members worked in the factory. The author was able, based on some 1200 historic photographs from the town's and Stey-Daimler-Puch's Archives and private collections as well with documents, to finalise a history of the Nibelungenwerk at war.

The Tiger and Panther tank from World War II are probably some of the most well known tanks of the war, and many books have been written about them, but it was the Panzer IV that was the backbone of the German Panzer arm, and the most numerous tank that the Allied tankers fought.

This book which is obviously a labour of love from the author, and who lived in close distance to the former "Nibelungenwerk"( and has been researching the topic for years) has produced a great book on the factory that built the Panzer IV.

In 1939 the Germans gave the factory the designation "toy factory" to cover the real purpose for the sprawling complex that it would grow into.

The book which covers tank production in St Valentin, a small village that became one of the most important armament places in Hitler's Germany, grew from 1941 - 1945 to become the biggest manufacturer of the Panzerkampfwagen IV.

However it also repaired the more serious damage to the Panzer IVs sent back from the front, outfitted the Ferdinands and turned them into the Elephant,made the Jagdpanzer IV, and finally the mighty Jagdtiger. as well as completing armoured rail cars.

There are numerous pictures of the production lines, charts on production numbers, photos of the more prominent Nazis visiting the factory, the effect of bombing raids by the allies and much more.

It also covers forced labour and prison camps, workforce, plant facilities, and the St Valentine satellite concentration camp, and working conditions.

The book is well written, interesting and full of facts on tank production and processes and would appeal to any armour buff that had an interest in how the Germans manufactured and supplied their tanks to the frontline units.

Local history vs. tank production

Indeed, I had hoped this book would have contained more detailed information on Dr. Ferdinand Porsche's heavy tank designs, especially his take on the legendary "Tiger".

Very short overviews on few prototypes, so-called "special-purpose vehicle production/conversion" and planned Panther (II) and Tiger II production were all very interesting, but way too brief - especially when the author had an access to many valuable archives and collections (cited throughout the book). This includes official reports/documents on technical development, business production and board of directors meetings. For example on the page 197: "completion of tanks (Porsche Tiger) with turrets can be documented up to chassis number 150 007" - but no further information is given (hint to the author: chassis and turret numbers are quite important to the panzer enthusiasts).

And how about the VK.4502(P)? According to Doyle, three prototypes were built at Nibelungenwerk but the author mentions nothing about them. The Jagdtiger 8.8 cm still remains as a mystery, and there's also reference to "one additional Jagdtiger completed under the supervision of the Soviet occupation forces" - again, no further info on this vehicle. This makes me wonder, were the last production reports were completely destroyed/captured by the Soviet forces?
The book has extensive chapters on forced labour, but there's no mention how Jagdtiger's mechanical problems were suspected as sabotage, done by "foreign workers" (further reading in "Combat History of German Heavy Anti-Tank Unit 653" by Karlheinz Munch).

I hope we can get to see a volume II (or revised and extended ed.) some day, including all the pictures from the original German language edition(s) and hopefully some heavier data on the tank production. Otherwise, the book is really beautifully done, satin-like pages with some intriguing (but a bit grainy, dark) photographs.

Overall: "OKH Toy Factory: The Nibelungenwerk: Tank Production in St. Valentin" has a lot of interesting trivia and bits... making hungry for more.

Homo sapiens has existed as a separate species for only a very short period of time on the evolutionary scale (six million years at most), and we share 99 percent of our DNA with our closest primate relatives. How then can humans be as different from other primates as we obviously are? Developmental psychologist Tomasello thinks that all of the many unique characteristics of humans are elaborations of one trait that arises in human infants at about nine months of age: the ability to understand other people as intentional agents. (He dismisses a bit too cavalierly the anecdotal evidence of recent animal behaviorists who would describe a good deal of animal behavior as intentional in this sense.) Language, elaborate cultures, and other hallmarks of humanity are all natural outgrowths of this single trait. The author is clearly highly credentialed, his thesis is certainly plausible, and the language is not jargony. However, his topic is really very limited; the bulk of the book focuses on the narrow issue of "shared attention." Only graduate students and developmental psychologists will want to know this much about the subject. Recommended for academic collections.

Really about linguistic growth beginning with joint attention in the 9 month old to the deep socialization of the 5-7 year old.

With all the interest in neuroscience these days, one could easily forget how much the social sciences grasp about the fundamental workings of things like, in this case, linguistic development. The origins of Human Cognition for Tomasello really means (and he acknowledges this) the origins of the fully linguistically developed individual. This is in large part a book about language development of the individual from its beginnings with joint attention in the nine month old to the 5-7 year old's internalization of the voice of society (social norms and expectation, ability to self-manage, self-control, inhibit unacceptable behavior, etc.) - call it the superego or whatever you want, Tomasello doesn't get into the various psychological-baggage-loaded interpretations of it, he just describes the linguistic preconditions and mechanisms that enable it. The entire second half of the book is entirely about linguistic development, and often redundant. But the explanation of the co-development of language and cognition from it's beginnings through the transition to understanding and internalizing that others are individuals like yourself but with alternative interpretations and intentions, and the detailed explanation of how this occurs based on the latest research (which takes up about the first half of the book) is excellently and very persuasively done. Very readable and, though written in 1999, very much in agreement with what neuroscience is discovering about linguistic and cognitive development. My one complaint is that Tomasello writes in a very argumentative fashion, constantly noting how recent findings support his views and disprove those of, for example, Chomsky, Damasio and Pinker. This would have a place in an academic article but is just a distraction here and makes it seem like he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He does, however, often relate how his views agree with those of the later Wittgenstein, which is illuminating.

"I remember you, Annie. I remember everything."

Annie Dumont led a busy life as an internationally loved pop star. She loved her work, but she had heard those awful stories about overzealous fans who had become obsessed with their idols. So she was naturally frightened when she began receiving strange phone calls. Little did she suspect who it was. Little did she realize that she was about to be dragged into a living nightmare, the likes of which could not have entered her wildest dreams !
My take: Okay, Miss Lamb really tried something different with this book. The hero and the heroine were lovers in a past life. The hero has clear recollections of their former lives since childhood. The heroine, Annie, does not. Her memories of their past life together is jogged only after meeting the hero. Annie is resistant to the hero's claims of a prior love that the two once shared. Anyway, Miss Lamb tried, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. I give it 3.5 stars. Parts of this book really dragged and I felt like I was rereading the same thing repeatedly. In other sections of the book, the story seemed a bit stagnant

The first half of the book describes the journey of twins Bowman and Kestrel, their family, and the remnants of the Manth people to their ancestral homeland. They face an attack by bandits, who take Kestrel and other young women captive; a "passion fly" that brings out the hidden sides of people's natures; and a valley in which happiness is the greatest danger of all. As the time of "the wind on fire" begins, the focus shifts to Bowman's preparation for what he thinks will be his role in moving the world from cruelty and danger to the time of kindness. The twins' relationships with one another and with other characters give emotional depth to the action and Nicholson's sure use of detail gives even minor characters clear personalities and a role in exploring the book's themes. While Firesong will have an especially strong appeal to fans of The Wind Singer (2000) and Slaves of the Mastery (2001, both Hyperion), enough background is provided to make this an independently powerful fantasy that will appeal to fans of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy (Knopf).

My ten year old had just started to read book one, and he is already half way through. He said it is really interesting. We got him book two and three also. So he can't wait to read all of them. He also said that it is weired so far, but nice and keeps him want to know more.

Great book for busy managers and students

This is a great book about a new topic called "Adaptive Business Intelligence". It is basically about modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is used to solve tough real-life optimization and prediction problems. The authors really know what they are talking about and have many years of business and teaching experience. They are also running a software company specializing in Adaptive Business Intelligence.

I was skeptical when I picked up this book and thought to myself that they can't possibly explain all those modern AI techniques without formulas. However, the book is very easy to read and really does cover modern AI techniques without getting into a lot of nitty gritty details (i.e., no formulas). They also have a detailed real-life example that they frequently refer to. The example is very good and I quickly saw how I could use Adaptive Business Intelligence.

The authors explain everything down to earth and on top of that it was fun to read and also reads well. I also liked that they have some references to other books in case you want to dive into a particular topic.

All in all it's a great book that makes modern science easy to understand for busy people. Even non-technical managers like myself will have no problems understanding the different techniques and how they apply to their own business. I highly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading!

PS: I borrowed the book to my sister who studies IT in California and she told me that it's a great introduction to modern AI. She actually never returned the book since she kept as a reference for one of her classes.

Conceptual book, not good in practice

I use the book as a reference for one of my classes on analytics and decision support systems. The book has a good introduction to the topic, explains concepts well, but it lacks a good discussion on implementation and practical applications. It is not a book to learn how to do things in ABI. The authors develop a running example of an application of ABI systems in the car rental industry, but it is hard to see how that would translate into other applications. The adaptability chapter and discussions along the book are very short and not very insightful. In my class, I complement this book with other books on how to develop decision support systems using Visual Basic and prediction methods using the R statistical language.
