Seabirds: A Natural History, by Anthony J. Gaston

This readable guide to the seabirds of the world provides updated material on every aspect of this fascinating group of birds. Ornithologist Anthony J. Gaston has devoted decades to the study of these beautiful and engaging birds, and he explains in detail what is special about being a seabird and why—like us—they live a long time and reproduce very slowly. Enriched with personal anecdotes from the field and remarkable photographs from John Chardine and Tim Lash, this book will appeal to students, birdwatchers, ornithologists, and naturalists alike.
The book covers the gamut of seabirds. It includes information on seabird types, adaptation and plumage, how they are distributed into communities, feeding behavior, migration, breeding, and the consequences of coloniality. The author concludes with a thoughtful analysis and discussion of the population dynamics and life-history strategy of seabirds.

Excellent purchase for experts and enthusiasts
By Cotinga Caller
I study seabirds for a living and still found the book very insightful. In contrast to some of Gaston's earlier books on murres and murrelets, Seabirds: a natural history is very easy reading. Particularly illuminating were the discussions on the "seabird syndrome"--the life history attributes (long lives and small clutches) that separate seabirds from most other birds--and the population processes that underlie that syndrome. I also really enjoyed the anecdotes at the start of each chapter, describing Gaston's adventures with seabirds around the world. The diagrams and photos are also good quality.

Wonderful overview of seabird biology
By KS
I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm currently perusing it a second time. The author is a biologist who writes very well for a general audience. One of the strengths of the book is that it presents a decidedly "big picture" view of seabirds - comparing seabird natural histories around the globe, through time, and with other groups of animals. It asks and attempts to answer many "why" questions about seabird life history strategies in an entertaining and thoughtful way. I highly recommend this book to birders and naturalists who are interested in these fascinating and sometimes mysterious birds. I caution, however, that this book is not about the field identification of seabirds and does not treat particular families of seabirds in a specific way - but there are more and more field guides and books that cover that area separately.

Birds at sea
By Ashtar Command
Anthony J. Gaston is an ornithologist who worked for 30 years for the Canadian Wildlife Service, specializing in the ecology of seabirds. He is therefore eminently qualified to write a general natural history of birds found mostly at sea: albatrosses, petrels, auks, boobies, etc.

I admit that I only skimmed his book, since most of it is rather technical and "boring" from the perspective of the general reader. However, I don't doubt that this book could be of considerable interest to students of ornithology, or perhaps very advanced bird-watchers.

All aspects of seabird natural history seem to be covered: coloniality, feeding behaviour, plumage, the life cycle, distribution, extinctions... There are very few illustrations, but the few colour photos are excellent. The author has also thrown in some personal anecdotes from his years as a researcher.

All in all, this looks like a relatively good book on the subject, so I give it four stars. But, as most volumes in the Poyser series, it's mostly for scientists.
