Latin American Dictators of the 20th Century: The Lives and Regimes of 15 Rulers, by Javier A. Galvan

Throughout the 20th century, the emergence of authoritarian dictatorships in Latin America coincided with periods of social convulsion and economic uncertainty. This book covers 15 dictators representing every decade of the century and geographically from the Caribbean and North and Central and South America. Each chapter covers their personal information (childhood, education, marriage, family…), assumption of power, relationship with the United States, oppression of civilians, and collapse of their regimes. The book also investigates inherent contradictions in U.S. foreign policy: promoting democracy abroad while supporting brutal dictatorships in Latin America. Such analysis requires multiple perspectives and this work embraces an evaluation of the influence of military dictatorships on cultural elements such as art, literature, journalism, music and cinema, while drawing on data from documentary archives, court case files, investigative reports, international treaties, witness testimonies, and personal letters from survivors. The dramatic experiences of courageous individuals who challenged these 15 oppressors are also recounted.

Some 20th Century Latin American Strongmen
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com"

' Prof. Galvan (Santa Ana College) gives us profiles of a handful of those who at various times ruled fourteen different countries, from Porfirio Diaz in Mexico (1876-1911), on through Manuel Noriega in Panama (1983-1989). His total is actually more than 15 dictators since he includes two “dynasties,” the Somozas of Nicaragua and the Duvaliers of Haiti. Each strongman is fitted into his times, with personal background, ascent to power, pattern of rule, relationship with the United States, and overthrow. There are several oddities in Galvan’s treatment. Within the rather vague meaning of the terms “left” and “right” in Latin America, almost all of the dictators are rightist, with neither Fidel Castro nor Daniel Ortega listed, suggesting a tilt toward the left. On the other hand, Galvan curiously omits mention of the pro-Fascist connections of several of the dictators during the 1930s, such as the Samozas, Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, or, albeit not covered, Gaetulio Vargas of Brazil and the young Castro. Within these limitations, this is a useful, but by no means definitive handbook to recent Latin American strongmen.'
