Enjoyable Concept
By Deborah Silva Alvarado
Plotted closely on the lines of Biblical apocalyptic narrative, The Last Prophet takes the reader on an imagined "what if" - what if an otherwise ordinary American man found himself playing a lead role in end times events as one of the two "witnesses" mentioned in the Revelation? This is unapologetically religious literature that quotes heavily from these high drama scriptures, and has enough minor characters finding salvation through Christian belief to make it suitable for a tract. One feels at times that's what the story's purpose is - to use the horrors of the ends times to persuade readers to get serious about God. Nothing wrong with that, certainly; but let's be clear about it.

As such, it does a good job of getting its point across in an entertaining adventure story. Abe Addon, the U.S. president who is actually a demon taken on human form as the "False Prophet" to serve his master, Satan, i.e. "the Beast", makes a believable, though quite conventional, lackey of old Horny. The "last prophet", Jonathan Elijah March (surprisingly enough a Gentile), knows quite well, along with his co-witness, Moe Princeton, and various angels that appear, that he and Moe must die three and half years into the seven-year period known as the Tribulation. These deaths are to be a publicly celebrated and world-viewed event in Jerusalem, after which, both he and Moe are to be brought back to life. John March's battles with the demon masquerading as the U.S. president take him through the gambit of action hero suffering: his son Samuel is kidnapped, causing his wife, Lara, to worry frantically as any mother would. He is followed; he is hated; he is threatened with bodily harm by Abe Addon's devotees. He continually faces the moral decision - will he sacrifice himself to his mission even though it will cause his little family to suffer?

As one who grew up studying the Bible, I'm usually put off by Hollywood drama that is supposed to be based on Bible stories but makes free use of poetic license to add a little more of a human-interest twist here, more of a love story there - adding tinsel town glitz to a drama that was already far above the average just the way it was. That Hollywood arrogance always seemed to me a corruption of the greatest literature of the world, to say nothing of the affront to sacred scripture. The Last Prophet never crosses that line for me, though Mr. Horton does add one bow to the drama preferences of the modern reader - Abe Addon takes a fancy to John Elijah's girlfriend, Lara, attempting to corrupt her "just because she is such a pure spirit", as fallen angels are so very prone to delight in doing. This causes our hero a type of romantic stress that I don't believe was in the original script.

I am a bit amused by the fact that the modern day incarnation of the prophet Eliyahu (Elijah), for whom Jews everywhere leave an extra cup out at the Passover Seder every year because of his soon expected arrival to herald the coming of the Moshiach (Messiah), is a card-carrying American Christian Gentile in this story. In addition, his co-witness, Moe Princeton, another American Gentile, is the modern day incarnation of Moshe (Moses). Add to this the American False prophet, and you get quite an Americo-centric telling of this well-known Biblical drama. I'd always figured the Anti-Christ/False Prophet would come from the EU, myself; more specifically from Germany (the one horn rising up amongst the ten horns), given that nation's history with the Jews. But I say amused, rather than offended, because...well...Americans do tend to think they should always get the lead role on the world stage. And in the same way that the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Christ has replaced the dark-skinned Semitic gentleman who roamed Roman-era Israel with his very Jewish disciples, such transformations are so obviously culturally biased they are almost high camp.

All in all, I enjoyed the book. It was fast-paced and looked at an old story from a new premise. I would definitely recommend it.

Never Thought I would Like a Book as This
By June Ahern
I surprised myself by choosing to read this book, thinking it was only for bible kind of people - no not so! It has a strong message for many while entertaining the reader.

Jonah (Jon) Elijah March is born to ordinary parents in an ordinary town in the United States. But he is no ordinary child. He is one of the last of two prophets mentioned in the Bible's Book of Revelations.

He has dreams that in time prove to manifest as actual events that become stronger when he is a teen. When his earlier visions, like the one about Lara--literally a girl of his dreams--being involved in an accident does not manifest as he envisioned, Jon thinks he is wrong. In time he realizes that his vision have merit and are not wrong, only he has not been patient or trusting enough to see them to fruition. In time Jon and Lara marry.

Another tells Jon he is slated for great things because of his visions and that God has chosen him to be a prophet but he doesn't believe it. And then an angel appears to him and follows it up with a miraculous sign. It is then that he accepts his fate. Along with his acceptance comes an ominous message--with the glory comes imminent death.

Jon is not alone in this journey. There are people who see him for what his purpose is to be, such people as the kind Pastor Weathersby who guides Jon to understand his gift and later he meets the Pope along with other spiritual world leaders who believe in his prophesies.

As Jon begins his mission by proclaiming God's message spreading the news that "The End of Days is at hand," the reader can find comfort in what Horton reminds us, "The world is a very transient place..." And warns people that the Beast (the Bible Beast who's not a very nice chap) is gaining power and influencing those weakened by their greediness and materialistic needs to where they "worship him" --the Beast --thus forsaking all reason and goodness (God). Sounds familiar. I believe there's a lot of that going on now, don't you? Jon then reassures all that will listen that "Jesus Christ will once again come to enlighten (or save) them." The Beast is in the image of a charismatic politician, Abe Addon who scams the people into trusting him and his false promises. All the while his only purpose is to control and dominate mankind. We have here what all good stories have--a good protagonist and a good bad antagonist and Abe Addon is a really bad guy with a winning smile.

Jon, Lara and their son Samuel travel to Israel as the end comes closer. In time Jon meets the other prophet Moe Princeton. I liked this character. There was something very earthly about him. Jon at times seemed so intense, even in his loving and insightful ways. On the other hand Moe is more of a regular kind of guy. Both have visions and messages for humankind, who per the usual, aren't listening.

Horton tells his readers that "Life is a only a brief stop on the road to eternity." And I find that reassuring while reading about the worldwide disasters spreading--drought, floods massive earthquakes, and finally, a devastating asteroid alerting us that the end of the world is at hand.

I'm not crazy for "Hey, guys! You screwed up big time and now it's a done deal," kind of books, but the journey with Jon is an interesting one. I had to agree that the world is in a very precarious position and too many leaders (corporations) have sold out the health of our planet and the welfare of the people for their greed and power ego. All in all, if you want to acquaint yourself with the Bible prophecies and/or be aware that life is fragile and fleeting, this book could be of interest to you.

Syria: From the Great War to Civil War, by John McHugo

Syria's descent into civil war has already claimed an estimated 150,000 lives while nearly nine million people have fled their homes. This is now the greatest humanitarian and political crisis of the twenty-first century. In this hard-hitting book, John McHugo considers why Syria's foundations as a nation have proved so fragile. Tracing the history of Syria from the First World War to the present, McHugo lays bare the causes of the current tragedy. He takes in the country's thwarted attempts at independence, the legacies of the Anglo-French partition that fragmented it, and the failures of divisive French policies. He then turns to recent events: religious and sectarian tensions that have pulled Syria apart, the pressures of the Cold War and the Arab-Israeli dispute, and two generations of rule by the Assads. Did Syria ever have a chance? The conclusions drawn in this timely account are uncomfortable for both Westerners and Arabs alike.

Review
'Enlightening' Robert Fisk, the Independent '[Provides] a real insight into the political fragility that underpins much of what caused the current civil war - remarkably prescient - At the very start of this enlightening read, McHugo makes the point that to the English-speaking world, Syria is a far off country which relatively few people have made a serious effort to understand. In writing this insightful and timely book, he has gone some considerable way to rectifying this neglect.' Sunday Herald 'Tell us with inspirational force how the Syrians have found the ability the speak out' TLS '[A] very timely modern history of Syria ... McHugo provides the reader with a high level of sound analysis ... The book is written both with academic scrutiny and with the empathy of an individual who cares greatly for his area of study.' Journal of Peace Research '[McHugo] explains the sectarian faultiness the led to the present war. Scholarly but accessible, McHugo does not prophesise or offer simplistic solutions' The Tablet 'A must-read for those who seek an informed opinion about Syria's civil war, far removed from propaganda and bias. The text is complemented by a chronology of Syria's history, five excellent maps and an extensive bibliography.' Jordan Times 'McHugo uncovers uncanny parallels between the pacification strategies of the French in the 1920s and the Bashar al-Assad regime today, exposing the continuous role of violence in the region's (flawed) state formation.' Raymond Hinnebusch, Centre for Syrian Studies, University of St Andrews 'A fluent introduction to Syria's recent past, this book provides the backstory to the country's collapse into brutal civil conflict' Andrew Arsan, St John's College, University of Cambridge

This book made me cry
By Serge H Ahmed
Syria is my father's native country. He never spoke about it since he left Syria in the 1940s and until his premature death in 1984. I never went there and everything I learned from Syria's history is from this remarkable little book by John McHugo. This book made me cry. It is sad to learn how this country is apparently inexorably descending the road to self-destruction. While my tears are trickling on my face, Syria is being teared up apart! I am just beginning to want to know more about my father's country precisly at a time when Syria risks to cease to exist.

Must Read on Syria
By Jeff
Having read countless books on Syria, I can say without reservation that this is the best for both individuals with little background on the country and a long-time observer. John writes with the flair of a journalist, making this book an easy read. He superbly manages to explain the varying dynamics behind all the key historical events in the country's modern history. John also breaks new ground, arguing in the last chapter that Assad regime employs many of the tactics that the French once did to put down resistance in Syria and manipulate its population. While he acknowledges that one must be careful in drawing this parallel, it is quite persuasively presented. There is plenty of scholarship on Hafez and Bashar Al-Assad, their personality cults, and the Ba’ath party. One would do well to read this book in tandem with other works, such as Patrick Seale's Asad. This book positively contributes to the English literature on Syria. If I had one fault it would only be that John sometimes breezes through some key points. However, had he done the opposite, this would not be a book for a new entrant on Syria.

A clear and detailed account of recent Syrian history by a knowledgeable author.
By John Martin
In Syria, John McHugo describes the history of this troubled land over the last 100 years. McHugo is an international lawyer and expert on Arab affairs. After an initial chapter to introduce the reader to the country, McHugo covers French rule, the early independence years to the coming to power of Hafez al Assad, the current rule of his son Bashar and a final chapter summing up the main points of the book. He points out that the French were more concerned with using Syria for their own gain than helping the area and used military force to impose their rule. Hafez al Assad staged a coup to gain power in 1970, which he held for some 30 years. The author covers the short-term merger with Nasser’s Egypt and various wars with Israel. Hafez al Assad was an Alawite and used the Ba’th party to rule. Sectarianism predominates in Syria and the various religious factions are in constant opposition to each other. Bashar came to power at the age of 34 when his father died of leukemia. He was Hafez’s second son, his first son, Basil, having died in a car accident. The current crisis started in March 2011 when a group of children in Der were arrested after writing anti-government graffiti. Protests erupted and Assad blamed foreigners and promised reforms, but the country descended into chaos. Opposition groups formed the Syrian National Council to consolidate their efforts, but this group has split and various Islamist groups, including ISIS, have also gotten into the mix. Russia has supported Assad and as of the writing of the book he seems firmly in control.

McHugo concludes by saying that French and British ambitions created a climate of mistrust of the West. Israel’s taking over of Palestine and wars against other countries have contributed to the unrest in the region. Patronage and state repression are also major factors in the situation. Finally, Syria is the theatre for the proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He does mention the terrible human tragedy that has resulted, but the primary focus is on the political situation. In the end he is not hopeful for any peaceful or positive solution.

This book is well worth reading for anyone who wants an understanding of what is happening in Syria and the region.

Ten stories in this book, mostly unavailable since their original printings in comic books, are collected here together for the first time, along with a few other gems. Also included are several virtually unknown works by Barks which have not previously been collected anywhere. Four of the stories in this book appear in restored versions which are intended to showcase them as Barks originally intended for them to be seen. All of the stories are sourced from high quality masters except for three for which there are no known surviving masters. As collected in this book, newly colored and sourced from original masters, the stories look much better in this book than in previous printings. The 26 Barney Bear and Benny Burro stories, the bulk of Barks' non-Disney work, are in print in the USA in another book, The Carl Barks Big Book of Barney Bear; however, unfortunately, original masters were not used for their reproduction. The Unavailable Carl Barks also includes a comprehensive index to all of Carl Barks' non-Disney comics, and other introductory, historical, and background articles, totaling about 40 pages. Every story that Carl Barks wrote or drew featuring Disney characters during his career as a comic book creator has been reprinted, often many times, in comic books and albums and books. The Disney work is the most important of Barks' work, but Barks also wrote and/or drew 36 other comic book stories featuring non-Disney characters between 1943 and 1953; these have been less-well served in reprinting and are much less well-known. They are generally comparable in quality to the average of the Donald Duck work he was doing at the same time. A few of them are quite creative and delightful, and stand well with the best short story work he was doing at the time. Most of them have been out-of-print since their publication decades ago in comic books. This book is intended to remedy that situation.

About the Author
Kim Weston is a long time Barks fan and scholar who has contributed to Mike Barrier's magazine, Funnyworld, as well as the Barks Bibliography, and the book, Carl Barks and the Art of the Comic Book. He was a contributor to the Celestial Arts book, Uncle Scrooge McDuck: His Life and Times, and to Another Rainbow's Carl Barks Library. He has contributed Barks and Disney information to the Overstreet Price Guide. He is a contributor to Fantagraphics Books' ongoing series of The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library. And he scripted The Ultimate Barks Collector gag page drawn by Walter Simonson. Recently he has been contributingto The Carl Barks Fan Club Pictorial and he has also written occasionally on Barks' work for the past 45+ years, contributing to Barks and Disney scholarship mostly for a small audience in an Amateur Press Alliance. That is where he commissioned Jack L. Chalker to write the article which was first published in that Amateur Press Alliance and which was later expanded to become Chalker's book, An Informal Biography of Scrooge McDuck. That work was one of the influences that later inspired Don Rosa to do his own comic book series, the well-loved Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. He authored the recently published The Carl Barks Index: A Concordance of the Comics of Carl Barks. The book indexes Barks’ complete Disney comic books from December 1946 to March 1953, plus the first 12 issues of Uncle Scrooge, extending that part of Barks’ work to June 1955, as published in the Fantagraphics Books: The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library Volumes 5-14 and also as in the original Comic Books. This time period and these books contain a majority of Barks’ very best work and includes the time period when Barks is generally considered to been at his peak of creativity, productivity, and quality of writing and drawing.

An absolute treasure for Carl Barks fans!
By I.H.
Apart from all the Disney work that Carl Barks did, he also wrote and/or drew 36 other comic book stories. Of them, 26 are available in the book "The Carl Barks Big Book of Barney Bear" by Craig Yoe, which contains versions scanned from the original comic books. This book by Kim Weston contains the other 10, as well as restored versions of two of the 26 in Yoe's book. All of them, except for three, are sourced from high quality masters and are beautifully colored, and look really wonderful! The other three are scanned from the original comic books. There are also short essays and restoration notes as well as a complete index to the Carl Barks' non-Disney comic books. Most of the stories in this book are from the years 1943-1945. In comparison, the Donald Duck story "Frozen Gold" was drawn in 1944 and "The Ghost of the Grotto" in 1947. I am personally very fond of the early work of Barks, and having all these non-Disney stories from the same era is an absolute treasure!

Barks genius in non-Disney Comics and Stories
By Amazon Customer
As I have said so many times before, Carl Barks never drew or wrote a dud. Before he was the chief chronicler of the Disney Ducks; Western publishing had him doing non-Disney comics and stories. Actually these non-Disney tales are the best these characters ever produced. I remember, as a child, the disappointment I felt when "Barney Bear and Benny Burro" were drawn by someone else. The only really good "Droopy tales" were drawn and scripted by Barks and the best non-Barks Droopy stories were written, if not drawn by Barks. This book collects those non-Disney Barks stories and a few that were only written by Barks. If you like the work of Carl Barks, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

Very disappointed.
By Lee Love
I used Word every day before retirement. That was 10 years ago. I've forgotten some of the applications I need to know, now that I'm back at work. This book does not begin to cover what I need, such as how to create macros. In the index, it states macros are on p. 345. They aren't. It's not worth the money.

Federal Administrative Law (University Casebook Series), by Kristin Hickman, Richard Pierce Jr

This casebook is designed with an emphasis on accessibility, includes many discussion problems and questions focusing on real-world application, and gives students a solid grounding in the basic principles of administrative law that they might come across in regulatory practice. While it pays due attention to the historical evolution of the doctrine in certain areas, this casebook focuses more heavily on current standards. Administrative law as a subject matter encompasses some very interesting theoretical discussions. Rather than remain strictly theoretical to the point of bordering on encyclopedic, this book tends toward the more practical, while still including enough reference to theory to enable a professor who wants to introduce more theoretical discussion into the classroom to do so.

The new edition includes sufficient material to support an advanced administrative law course taught to students with previous exposure to the regulatory state. The author created additional teaching resources to assist in using the book for such a course.

The casebook is supported by an extensive teacher’s manual and website, www.hickmanpierce.com. Adopters can access this frequently updated site to find excerpts of new cases and other helpful supplementary materials.
