From the beginning of his professional career as a soloist John Ogdon was hailed as a musician of rare understanding and phenomenal technical gifts. Over the course of several harrowing years Ogdon would spend large periods of time in and out of psychiatric wards and halfway houses. The drugs and treatments prescribed sometimes affected his coordination, and his reputation suffered as a result. Yet Ogdon's commitment to his art remained undimmed, and until the end he drew out performances of tremendous beauty and conviction from the depths of his ravaged heart.

A surprisingly good read

Charles Beauclerk writes compellingly about the complex life of John Ogdon, one of the twentieth century's great pianists. Although I knew Mr. Ogdon well, as his treating psychiatrist during his period in the United States, I learned so much more in the reading of the official biography. Not a reader of biographies, I was anticipating a tedious read--a familiar subject written with from the familiar angle most biographers take. Not so. I was gripped by the material and by the writing from the very first chapter. about John's rendering of the impossibly difficult work of Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 14 July 1988. Reading it was as if I were hearing the music itself. Familiar with Beauclerk's work from Shakepeare's Lost Kingdom (Grove Press, NY, 2010), I found Piano Man to surpass his brilliant narrative. It reminded me of when I first read F. Scott Fitzgerald in college.

Beauclerk walks the line between focusing on John's illness and his genius in such a way that one is left with a balanced view, no small task, since both were described in high relief throughout the book. The unsung heroism of Mrs. Ogdon received proper recognition, finally, as one can see the magnitude of her responsibilities with John as well as her sacrifices of her own career.

I learned a great deal about music generally in reading this book, as Beauclerk demonstrates an authoritative voice in describing
the encyclopedic musicology of Ogdon. The research into Ogdon's background, education and musical culture which went into
the book is staggering, yet remains informative and engaging throughout. I must thank Richard Ogdon for asking Mr. Beauclerk to do this monumental and highly readable biography.

JOHN OGDON: PHENOMENAL PIANIST, BRILLIANT YET DAMAGED MIND

First, this is an important story, well told. Although a musician, I missed Ogdon's glory days, and so finding out about his phenomenal abilities was a new story for me. It is also the story of Ogdon the person, so it is a sometimes achingly sad story. First, Instant fame, then over booking of concert appearances; poorly understood and always mentally fragile, leading a life that would have challenged and exhausted a physically and mentally robust person. Ogdon could do things on the piano like sight reading orchestral scores and playing them with deep understanding and polish at first go that left other musicians gasping. Remembering everything he ever played, Ogdon was ready to sit down and perform it publicly. Finding out just before a performance that it isn't going to be Brahmas One as he had thought, he was both able and happy to do Brahms Two on the spot. There were devoted friends, but no one who knew what to do for him,. You read of problems turning into disasters, not even the professionals knowing how to deal with them, always financial pressure, and you think what a waste . John the person comes through as amazingly intelligent, not just in music, and fundamentally good. He could express music as few pianists could to his listeners, he just couldn't speak for himself.

Og's life: complicated but well played

So much depth in so many biographies is limited by tangible access to the subject in a variety of ways, many quite insurmountable. Robert Caro overcame the problem by massive research when he didn't have access to Lyndon Johnson. Norman Sherry had short access to Graham Greene in later years but largely re-traced his steps and found most of his acquaintances and friends so he was thorough in his preparation and delivery in his multi-volume bio. Ronald White produced a relatively pithy but expansive enough biography to touch the heart and mind of the reader without all the mundane details which can bog down such an endless subject as the life of Lincoln.

A reason for reading bios is simply to try to arrive at some sort of conclusion on the question of how genius is derived, expressed and lived. Beauclerk approaches a nearly perfect answer in documenting the penultimate pianist and reader of music notations in the Life of John Ogdon. He was able to do this so remarkable well because he achieves incisive insight into the man, his music and his mind thanks to a penetrating understanding, nearly complete access to Og's friends, family and acquaintances and, most importantly, a relationship from his early years as a child to John Ogdon including a longstanding friendship with his son. The insights are astounding, I believe, many by example, parable or recalled and reconstructed quotes. Most biographers play the quavers (eighth notes), efficiently Beauclerk hits hemidemisemiquavers (sixty-fourths).

While there were many raucous and even rebarbative moments in the Life, Og's a truly loveable, cuddly personality in spite of the mental challenges. He had to be exceptionally frustrating to those around him and even conniving and impossible, yet his character and personality (how he'd shake hands of each orchestra member, or remember a fan from two decades before--including the songs performed and the venue, or his photographic memory of entire pieces not played for two decades before) prevailed. When examining Lincoln, Sakharov, Nixon, one finds remarkable feats of memories of texts, equations or foreign policy details respectively wrapped in strong personalities even with some deficiencies of their own.

The origins of Baby Og's genius: the piano roll conditioned him to sight read complex pieces of music at age six, hooks the reader immediately. How fascinating to see a chubby six year old perform gymnastic feats with his tiny arms on a large piano to play Chopin. His later triumphs in Soviet Union, stages the world over and even in impromptu sessions simply because he loved to play hold the reader. As an amateur musician I was captivated; as a fan of playing prog rock and sometimes obscure songs (King Crimson's Night Watch or Premiata Forneria Marconi's fascinating tunes or the music of Focus) I could immediately identify with Og's obsession with Busoni or Sorabji. Then to listen to them as played by Og after my trip to the library or you tube and to hear his own compositions, I was completely blown away. Og was the composition and the piano--a magical merger.

In spite of all the turmoil of his mental states, it was clear also he and his wife have here a love story as presented so carefully revealed by Beauclerk. The relationships he had with managers, caretakers and booking agents is so well done and gives a superb look into all the sturm und drang one finds in a recording and touring artist of Og's stature. How he succeeded so much and so long was amazing. Og's life was a complicated, but well played song.

I don't want to spoil the read by playing too many notes so, this is not just a book for musicians, no matter how limited their talent, or simply those interested in the mental challenges Og owned. It is a book to read for examining the question of genius and how it's formed. It's a superlative tribute to a great, maybe the greatest pianist, of all classical music and the people around him as related by Beauclerk, a most perspicacious and accomplished writer.

I'm a history buff! Love my books,yes even in this age of DOWN LOADS and PAPERLESS BILLING!! My collection of history books had a missing slot: THE MIDDLE AGES. Get a better quality

When I received this book it was falling apart, written in and the CD in the back was split in half so I couldn't even use it. The book got me through the class but I would recommend getting a better quality book.

Too "easy"!

Most everyone in my class felt that this book, while having an interesting format, was irritating to use. There is no basic glossary of word parts and combining forms, only an index that lists the exercise number where the item can be found. Normally, I might say that this facilitates learning through practice rather than rote, but many of the index references are incorrect! Apparently, they have not been updated since the previous edition. This also makes the book useless as a reference. Also, the way the book categorized body systems made little sense. For instance, why is the pulmonary system included in the section on the special senses? I give this book a C-.

Who Was Frederick Douglass?

Frederick Douglass was born a slave. Just like a horse or a plow, he was the property of a white man. From a young age, Frederick wondered why that was so. Wasn’t he as smart, strong, and deserving of liberty as anyone else?

At the time Frederick was born, in 1818, there were 1.5 million black slaves in the southern United States. Most didn’t learn to read. This was against the law! But Frederick taught himself to read and write.

Most slaves didn’t risk their lives to run away to freedom. This was against the law, too. But Frederick escaped and helped others do the same.

Great Book.

This book was very informative. Though I have some knowledge of Frederick Douglass life, the book gave even more prespective. I found facts not previous known by me nor mentioned in other books I have read. I read this book to my children and they did not want me to stop. I think they walked away with some valuable information as well about Mr. Douglass as well as a few life lesson. I definitely recommend this book for all to read.

My ten year olds enjoyed this book that introduced them to the life of s great American. The writing is a little stilted, but it still held their interest. I didn't find any glaring errors of fact or eccentricities of interpretation.

Artfully illustrated and 105 pages of double-space print, it offers a good overview of the evils of
slavery, Douglass' early life as a slave, and his later life as an outspoken abolitionist. One of it
particularly nifty features is its six, page-size backgrounders titled "Slavery In America",
"William Lloyd Garrison", "A Mighty Team: Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton",
"Harriet Tubman, The Black Moses", "Reconstruction" and "The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and

His reaction to each of these episodes in his life is conjectured in his thoughts and is set within general historical facts of the time.
The equestrian statue of him which stands outside the State Building in Helena, Montana, remembers him in the history of that Territory/State.
This story relates the myriad of other stories which involved this volatile, brave and brash young Irishman from the city of Waterford.
He resided on this earth for a brief 44 years, yet he packed more into his eventful life than ten people who might live to twice his age.

A great summary of many theories, with a practical approach

I'm very pleased I found this book. I've tried a number of different approaches to lose that "tire" I've carried around for the last several years...Atkins, the Zone, South Beach...but with each one I've felt like I wasn't getting the complete nutritional spectrum I needed, and I felt like I was depriving myself of some of my favorites. This book seems to draw the best from a number of different approaches, and repackages it in a reasonable, sensible manner. Dr. Stork doesn't advocate starving yourself, or swearing off all kinds of foods...he rather suggests moderation, healthy alternatives, and a balanced approach. Refreshing.

Dr. Stork puts equal emphasis on an active lifestyle, which I like. Finding ways to incorporate little changes in your level of activity can add up...I like the fact he doesn't beat you over the head with some Jersey Shore-like workout regimen. I'm looking for a lean, healthy physique, which reflects a healthy lifestyle. This approach advocated in the book I think I can stick with.

This book is written much in the same manner as Men's Health magazine, which I like...short digestible segments of easy-to-understand advice, backed by research. You can pick up the book and read a section or two, and get find something useful immediately. No program, no steps, just helpful lifestyle advice.

I think anyone looking to either enhance their current fitness/nutritional approach, or anyone that's been frustrated with "diets" in the past, could benefit from this book.

Not for me, but maybe for someone...

When I bought this book, I expected it to be more like a set of guidelines to follow; which it is in some ways. The authors lays out some good guidelines to follow, and the Pick 3 life changes to make seem like they would work. However, most of the stuff in the book is something that you could just as easily find with a 5 minute Google search. Also, I do not think he talks about his tips as in-depth as he should. Throughout the book he includes a bunch of simple tips to follow, but he basically just says "Here it is!", and then never really explains the point or revisits it later on.

The one area where I feel that this book would be helpful for some people are in the eating and workout plans he outlines. He does a good job of describing everything you need to make the food and how to actually make it. The same can be said of the workout plans in which he provides good pointers. However, I feel that the workout plans are fairly basic and mostly for people who have little exercising experience.

I was expecting a book full of guidelines of little changes you can make in everyday life, but what I got was a book with a lot of basic tips that I already knew and a basic workout plan. I also was not expecting so much of the book to be dedicated to a specific diet plan where he lays out 4 weeks of meals and how to make them; I was not really looking for a guide that was going to put me on a specified eating plan.

Overall, I give the book 2 stars because I don't like it and I do not think it can really help me. However, this rating could be misleading because I imagine that there are many people out there who would like it and could benefit from it. I think that this book would most benefit people who are very overweight or obese and have little knowledge of exercise or nutrition. If you are just 10-20 pounds overweight and are trying to lose that last bit of flab, this book is NOT for you.

A comprehensive, practical and accessible guide to the latest science of weight management

This is a great book with a broad potential audience. Travis Stork and Peter Moore describe the "normal" situation today with a lot of heart. The "normal" situation is one in which people eating common foods and living a common lifestyle swiftly accumulate abdominal fat and a standard set of health problems that seem to multiply, one after another -- and that this makes people end up feeling bad about themselves and feeling older than they are and not knowing where to begin. But the authors move quickly forward with optimism and pragmatism and a simple set of realistic choices for those who commit themselves to dropping the pounds and start feeling better, looking better, and increasing their chances of living longer. Their dietary advice reflects some of the smartest advice about nutrition going today, as far as I can tell -- it talks about foods, rather than nutrients, and is smart enough to know that the problem is largely one of carbs and processed foods -- often foods marketed as "healthy", ironically -- rather than eggs or dairy fat or saturated fat in meat. I found it refreshing to see someone point out that 2 percent milk can help you absorb vitamins and it slows down your digestion. They also push fresh foods at every turn, of course. As fro the practical advice, they talk less about what you should look for in labels and more about what your fridge and kitchen cupboards should look like. They get the fact that sweetened sodas account for belly fat more than probably any other item in the food supply. They understand that "diets" don't work, but broad changes in how you think about food and fun does. They break down exercise into a simple but effective planks, pushes pulls and squats -- but they also talk about habits of movement that help, like cleaning your house in the evening rather than watching TV. Easy to read too.
