Not a good beginner's guide

I was (and still am) very interested in learning more about narrative therapy--as the tidbits I know of seem like great additions to treatment. I bought this book because of all of great reviews here on Amazon (especially the reviews saying this was a great book for beginners), I'm giving this 3 stars because this book is extremely hard to understand. I would not recommend this to beginners. I'm not sure what other narrative books (if any) offer a great beginner's guide..but this was definitely not that kind of book.

I am not sure why White writes in such a confusing manner but the next attempt I make to learn more about Narrative therapy will not include any writings by White. Yes, he was a brilliant guy but even the brightest people have great difficulty communicating to others who are not at their level.

An Excellent Addition to the Therapist's Library

I remember reading about narrative therapy in my beginning counseling textbooks and thinking, "I would never use this, it doesn't seem helpful or communicable." That mindset changed when I sat in with another counselor who used it almost exclusively. I was amazed. Not only was he able to use it across multiple ages and clinical diagnoses, but people (including myself, the observer) left the office feeling like a new person. I asked how he first got involved with narrative therapy, and he pointed me in the direction of this book by the late Michael White. I want to read this book twice before I give any critical analysis to the content, but I will say that everything you need to know about narrative practice is in this book. That said, it is a lot to digest. I think I struggle most with this book because of the author's Australian heritage. It's not that his writing lacks potency or salience, it's just culturally different from what I'm used to here in the States. Nevertheless, I encourage anyone interested in expanding their therapy toolbox to read and reread this book. You will find that many of the central aspects of therapy (what makes it work e.g., the relationship) are still the trunk upon which the branches of narratives extend. What made this book significant for me was the way I saw these central dynamics of therapy from a new perspective.

An Enlightened Approach to Change

As a trained intentional interim pastor I work with individuals and congregations that are seeking to make changes. Michael Whites book is a filled with stories of change rooted in a narrative approach and understanding to change. I found his work stimulating to my imagination and his methods along with those who have written about narrative mediation will inform my practice. His prose is easy to read and understand. His genius brightly shine through his case studies and deep understanding of our human condition. His early death is a great loss to those working in the healing professions.

Guardians in an uproar!

In book 4 of the Rise of the Arkansas Werewolves, we find Zane in Jonesboro with a couple of upcoming Guardians, getting their wings tattooed onto their backs. Something happened a few months earlier that is messing with Zane's inner wolf. He has a suspicion of what it is, but is not positive. He runs into an old friend, Skylar after breaking into a shed to have a hiding place where he can shift when his body is ready. They catch up a bit after she finds him naked in her tool shed, and buys some clothes at the consignment shop for him. What happens when Zane cannot control his shifting. What does Skylar do to help him? How does she keep him hidden so that he does not break Pack Law? Who tries to attack her at Ava's house where she is working when she goes to check on things one night? Who is the person that is creating all the drugs that are being had in Jonesboro? What happens when the person behind the drugs purposefully infects Zane, kidnaps Skylar, and threatens to kill her and Zane? You really must read this book. It is incredible!

Another great read in this ARKANSAS WEREWOLVES series

Another great read in this ARKANSAS WEREWOLVES series! Jodi doesn't disappoint with keeping you glued to your seat telling us about Zane, Barrett's right hand man with the Guardians and Skylar, his little sister's best friend that he hasn't seen in years. Zane is set on a task with 2 other Guardians and 2 newbies to get inked and goes MIA while Lucien and Jaxson try to cover for him with Barrett. Skylar finds a naked man in her tool shed and recognizes him from the start and helps him stay hidden while he's working out his issue. As Barrett is dealing with the other Alpha's and not hearing from Zane, he sends Damon in undercover to get to the bottom of things. We all know Damon isn't going anywhere without Ava, and Ava takes Granny. A great round-up of getting all the characters together in the end for a 'shit-storm'. Loved this and all the ones before.

WOW Jodi Vaughn did it again! I love this series and was looking forward to this book for a while and it def didnt disappoint! I love a strong female lead and that sure is Skylar to T, she has over come a lot in her life but doesnt back down to anyone. This book is fast paced, action packed, emotional, funny and there is GRANNY!!!!

About the Author
Jamie Oliver grew up in his parents' country pub, the Cricketers in Clavering, where he started cooking at the age of eight, before studying at London's Westminster Catering College. He then went on to work with some of the top chefs in England namely Antonio Carluccio at the Neal Street Restaurant and Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers at the River Café. The author of such popular titles as The Naked Chef, Jamie's Kitchen, Jamie's Italy, among others, he has written for the Saturday Times, served as Food Editor at GQ and Marie Claire magazines, and hosted the popular television show The Naked Chef. He is twenty-nine and lives in London with his wife Jools and their daughters, Poppy and Daisy.

My New Favorite Cookbook

Beautiful! I loved the show, I recorded every episode, and I'm thrilled to finally have the book! It's really fun to leaf through, with many photos - and it's very colorful. Somewhere for your eye to go on every page. The recipes are awesome, I've been making some of them for years, and some, that weren't in the show, I can't wait to try. Growing hints are great, even though I live in central California, I think I can use all the info Jamie provides - it's not hard to grow stuff here, after all. This book makes me want to expand my garden, which means taking over the neighbors yard. I wonder if they'll mind.

Great book if you are interested in scratch cooking using fresh ingredients throughout the seasons. I have found a number of go to meals for each season that I now know by heart. One thing I love about Jamie's style is his constant sense of encouragement. Basically he says to add more of something if you like it or take something away if you don't but to experiment and excite your palate. The book reads easily and has a lot of asides that Jamie uses to help you grow the ingredients on your own or to find them. For those familiar with Jamie it is like he is reading it to you and you can hear his voice with each recipe and explanation. If you like Jamie I recommend this highly.

Not sure I could live without this cookbook now...

First: I never write product reviews. However, after eating delicious meal after delicious meal thanks to this cookbook, I just had to offer my accolades to the list. My husband and I love to cook. We love to try new recipes at least a couple of times each week. EVERY meal that we have tried from this book has been great. Mushroom risotto? Yum. Italian bread and cabbage soup? Amazing. Essex fried rabbit? Delicious. Indian carrot salad, steak and Guinness pie, rhubarb fool...aaahhh. These are just the recipes that I'm thinking of off of the top of my head -- I know I'm forgetting many other stellar ones that we've tried. This might be the best Christmas gift I've ever received. Also, the gorgeous photography and interesting discussions on gardening and sustainability make it an interesting read as well. I highly recommend this book.

Humana delivers yet again, as they always do. Slick cover art and a bevy of interesting & contemporary subject matter (one drama is about astronauts repairing the ISS, one of whom has not not slept since the mission started) that begs any fan of drama to keep reading after you turn the first page.

About the Author
Richmal Crompton was born in Lancashire in 1890. The first story about William Brown appeared in Home magazine in 1919, and the first collection of William stories was published in book form three years later. In all, thirty-eight William books were published, the last one in 1970, after Richmal Crompton's death.

Hilarious - made me laugh out loud several times, which I otherwise never do.

I read the William books as a young child. They were red hardback books that I'd inherited from my older siblings. However, we didn't have this particular book, so I've now read it for the first time.

William is the sort of boy who, if he were a real boy, and existed in this day and age, would probably be sent to an institution, or at the very least be heavily sedated with Ritalin, or something even worse.

Apart from William, the Brown family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Brown and William's older siblings, Robert and Ethel.

Mrs. Brown is resigned and patient as regards William's escapades, while Mr. Brown mostly contents himself with exclaiming “He's mad, mad, I say!”

William's exploits are actually more than minor misdemeanours and, instead of mildly putting up with them, it might have been more fitting had the parents set some firm limits. But then of course the book wouldn't have been so funny.

This book was published in 1922 (I read the books for the first time in the 50s), and it contains quite a few old-fashioned and thus unfamiliar words and expressions. It is eloquently written; the author doesn't talk down to the reader, and puts to good use her rich, extensive vocabulary.

One linguistic feature that puzzles me is that, while the rest of the family talk in an absolutely refined and educated manner, William, though gifted with amazing powers of persuasion and articulation, expresses himself in a distinctly ungrammatical and “common” way, which in fact more resembles the speech of their servants, (William's family is middle-class, and they were endowed with both a Cook and a housemaid, as far as I recall, and perhaps more servants.)

In this book, William wanders into a nearby mansion and finds himself mistaken for a servant boy, “the new Boots” (whatever that is), and tries his hand at this, until it all ends tumultuously. In a later chapter his Great-Aunt Emily comes to visit; her only occupations are eating and sleeping, and when she sleeps she snores in an impressive and entertaining manner. The ever resourceful William avails himself of the opportunity to augment his pocket money by inviting the village children to come to witness/listen to this fascinating performance, and soon they're all lining up and paying all they've got to witness the show. Subsequently, Great-Aunt Emily cuts short her stay, which had been threatening to become exceedingly long-lasting, and Mr. Brown, who was not enamoured of her, rewards William with half-a-crown. (And I recall a time when half-a-crown was quite a large sum!).

The book contains innumerable further hilarious episodes, including one in which Mrs. Brown was so irresponsible as to entrust William with looking after a toddler for the afternoon, though Robert was shocked at her na�ve trust in her younger son.

I'm not a person that generally laughs aloud when watching a funny film or reading a funny book, but found myself doing so several times when reading this book. Since I've heard that laughing is extremely good for one, maybe I should read or re-read all the William books! I highly recommend them, including this one, to all.

WILLIAM is a must meet! His young life is full of adventures and crafty designs to get by with yet another well planned scheme. There is always something entertaining to be experienced in William's world; it is light reading at it's best!

About the Author
Born in California at the end of World War II, John lived there until his father was transferred to Japan where he graduated from high school. He graduated from Nile C. Kinnick (YO-HI) where he excelled in track and field. He served with the US Army Special Forces for 13 years, then joined the US Department of State and served another 14 years. He has traveled to over 100 countries. He is a graduate of George Mason University with a BS Degree in Education and has a Master s Degree from the University of Leicester, UK. John is married to Joyce and they have 5 children. He and his wife are now retired and living in northern Florida.

Gillgren continues to bring excellent children’s fiction as he combines elements of history, romance, and adventure into a new type of treasure hunt. His second book "The Treasure of Ching Shih" in "The Adventures of the Cali Family series induces new waves of excitement and mystery.

The Cali Family can’t resist the opportunity to go diving in Honolulu, Hawaii for another treasure hunt experience. After all, who could resist diving for stolen loot left behind by the notorious, female Chinese pirate Ching Shih?

The reader sails into the year 1844 as Gillgren describes that dark, ruthless nature of Ching Shih. While female pirates existed throughout history, she proved herself unstoppable as she took command of her deceased husband’s 1,800 ships and led over 80,000 men. Her thieving knew no bounds as she robbed jewels and opium. However, before the treasure could safely transition to Hawaii, a natural disaster seized the land, and the treasure was lost at sea.

Fast forwarding hundreds of years later, Mr. Chang visits the Cali family in California to ask for their help in finding Ching Shih’s missing treasure. Their treasure hunt journey is anything but easy. The Cali family deals with villains that have the ruthlessness of Ching Shih herself, and no characters are who they appear to be. In spite of the chaos, the family proves that courage can overcome obstacles, and that hardships can’t break the bonds of friendship and love.

Gillgren continues to excel as he blends the realms of history and fiction. Ching Shih’s backstory is carefully woven into the plot, and has a huge impact on the story’s happenings.

What sets this action adventure book apart is its brilliant characters. Carmine continues to be a protective, strong father for his family, and ends up being a great inspiration to his son, Snail, whose bravery allows him to escape when his family is kidnapped. Carmine also doesn’t hesitate to show love to his wife or children, which also inspires Snail to grow a soft heart for Teri, a beautiful Chinese girl connected to the dastardly events of the novel. Mr. Chang also makes a fantastic villain, but the reader can still laugh when Carmine insults him.

Gillgren offers a fun, suspenseful, yet heartfelt read that will engage children and adults in the intriguing wonders of treasure hunting and sea exploration. Highly recommended for readers of any age who enjoy high sea adventures and a fun read. This is the second book in John Gillgren’s "The Adventure of the Cali Family series". This reviewer is looking forward to reading and reviewing the third book: "The Treasure of Ocracoke Island".

Dated, but still informative for rustic camping or backpacking.

Written in a style akin to my grandfathers, Sears provides some excellent advice to greenhorns as well as old woodsmen. Having camped in established campgrounds as well as backpacking in the backwoods and the Appalachian Trail, I only wished I had read this earlier.
Much of the material is dated and many will find it lacking for modern camping in the established campgrounds, however the prudent camper would do well to read and understand what it took to be an experienced woodsman in the days before modern campgrounds.

A Must Have for Any Bushcraft Library

George Washington Sears or "Nessmuk" - his nom de plume, is a must read for all who enjoy the outdoors and camping of the "old ways". This book is one of the best reads for those who practice Bushcraft and Self Reliance in the outdoors. And for any of you followers of Dave Canterbury, this book has had a great influence on the crafting his philosophies for self reliance and his "common man" approach to the outdoors.

Get this book, it's an awesome read and it's now one of my favorites along with A Sand County Almanac. Very descriptive and vivid. You'll learn a lot and not be able to put it down. Nessmuk's stories about adventures in the woods are great and will inspire you to spend more time 'out there' and less time inside.

A deeper look into the strategies

Filippo does a good job in providing a lot of educational material in this book. The starting chapters were very well written in my opinion. The information was clear and concise and you get a lot of information from a few paragraphs. But prior to this book, I was advised by the study guide in the CHP program to tackle the 4 main readings for Level I CHP exam in an order with this book as the last. This judgement call was perfect because the prior knowledge to fully exploit the treasures of this book is much needed. (Please look at my other reviews to see the other books that were read before this)

The strategies are mentioned with sufficient detail and some real life events were depicted. It provides a perfect "hands-on" experience to the reader, but you know what they say, "you got to get your hands dirty to know the real essence of it all". Who said that? I don't know... I made it up.

But the book is a good read and definitely worth the time if you wish to absorb what-the-title-promises. An absolute good recommended and inclusion into the CHP program.

Good overview of the different strategies, but...

If you want to have an overview of the top hedge fund strategies, this is a good book to read. It is an overview though. It does not go deep into each strategy, and at times, the explanations are superficial, or inaccurate, ex: when talking about merger arbitrage the author mentions the collapse of the tender offer for American Airlines in 1989.... but it was really the inability to finance a going private transaction for United Airlines at $180 plus per share that marked the end of the LBO driven bull market of the 80's.
