This author is a financial modeling pioneer
By Adrienne Wheeler, Ed.D.
John Tjia’s involvement with the first financial projection model on a mainframe several decades ago and his ongoing work building models for prominent financial sector firms gives him a unique perspective. His book provides straightforward steps for creating integrated financial statement projection models and helpful explanations of the related operating, investing and financial variables that projections are based upon. As with any good introductory text there are plenty of definitions for new terms/concepts such as: one-off model versus template model; integrated financial statement projection model; iteration; the revolver and circular references. Emphasis is also placed upon streamlining the modeling process by determining whether the model under consideration will be: an annual or quarterly model; full-blown or quick & dirty model and what questions will it answer.

A “best practices” chapter lists common sense refinements that make spreadsheets more readable such as color coding input cells and having one location for all input values that are referenced throughout the model using absolute and mixed cell addresses. At the midpoint of the book a simple model is introduced, the five subsequent chapters each add a layer of complexity to that model. The book ends with two chapters that introduce Visual Basic in a thorough yet interesting manner.

Please note that since the first edition of Tjia’s book predates other Financial Modeling textbooks, he makes no assumptions about his readers having any background in financial modeling and explains everything in great detail. Hence the acquisition of Tjia’s book will significantly enhance your arsenal of financial modeling reference materials.

Credible, instructional, and valuable
By K V
When reading an instructional book one occasionally gets the impression that the author might not have much hands-on or professional experience. That is certainly not the case with "Building Financial Models". Throughout this introduction to financial modeling, one can sense that the author has worked extensively in the field. His list of tips, best practices, pitfalls to avoid, when to use - or not use - a certain function all seem to hint at hard-won knowledge that could only have come from years of experience and experimentation. In the same way that every regulation on a ship is the result of a disaster, I'd guess every tip or piece of advice he gives was also the result of a mistake being made. It's a very humble and thoughtful approach that lets the reader know there are many ways one can introduce errors into models - and how to best avoid doing so. The author made the various mistakes and notated ways to avoid them here with the hope that we won't repeat them. The result is a book that comes across as very credible and reassuring. One quickly realizes that the author is an expert about the subject which he is writing.

While this book may be viewed as an introduction to modeling, my guess is even experienced modellers will benefit from reading it - even if only a quick skim. There are almost certainly going to be a few techniques of which one is unaware that will make one go "Ah, that's a good idea!" and that will likely save time and frustration. There is value in this book for many levels.

For one new to this subject, one may be surprised at how much of modelling - and the book - is based around Excel. In the financial world, Excel is the giant when it comes to modelling. If one wants to learn financial modelling, one needs to learn Excel. The two can be considered inseperable and the author understands this. The plentiful advice given on using Excel should not be overlooked - even if it at times seems minor. Chances are the author included what he wrote with good reason and skipping over - or not fully paying attention - is inviting eventual peril.

Besides the use of Excel there is the substance of the book that one would expect. Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow, Retained Earnings, Plugs, Revolvers, etc. These are explained in a way that even a complete novice to the field should be able to understand. Throughout the book there is a very logical flow in how concepts are taught. It's very confidence inspiring as one gets the feeling that a lot of time and thought went into developing this book.

After an introductory look at Excel and an overview of financial concepts, the reader is encouraged to build their own models with step-by-step instructions. I'd highly recommend spending the time doing so as this is where the most value for a novice will be gained. The hands-on work - inevitably making mistakes which one learns from - will allow one to see how the various parts of a model are connected and what's possible. The author has downloadable Excel files on his site of the examples in the book. I'd suggest just using those as references for one's own work. Simply glancing at those will not give the same rewards as actually building one's own models.

In the professional world, one occasionally comes across an expert whose experience and knowledge makes one think, "You really know a lot about this field. You should write a book and share what you've learned." "Building Financial Models" strongly gives the impression of being such a book.
-----

I used MS Office 2011 while going through the book which itself uses screenshots from Excel 2007. The differences between the images of the book and the current Excel are mostly superficial. Occasionally, it takes a small amount of time to track down the function needed. It's not a big problem.

However, using a Mac instead of Windows will be a nuisance as many of the time-saving keyboard shortcuts mentioned in the book are completely different or non-existent on a Mac. I'd highly encourage using Windows while going through this book.

Not exactly the textbook I want
By Papasik
I was looking for a textbook for my own Financial Modelling class. My goal was to find something that describes creating a financial model centered on cash flow, bottom up approach (from business processes to money) and is lean and flexible. For Internet startups that primarily use my class, this is a must: they have no history, no physical assets or debt and have to evaluate dramatically different strategies. I went through this book cover to cover (Kindle ed) and did not keep it.

What this book is good for:

- RATIO ANALYSIS. If you want a quick reference on how to compute ratios and what they mean - this book has a great chapter on it.

- PERIOD MODIFICATIONS. Different projections and discounting for end of period, mid-period (with proper formulas and even switches) is very useful.

What this book is not good for

- CASH FLOW. It is kept out of the picture, introduced late and is built from previously constructed BS and IS. For a large pre-existing business, you can get around with it, but for a situation where you are building a new business or doing a credit check, taking away WC adjustments (caused by accrual accounting) and noncash like D&A is only part of the story. You do want to see CF-O, CF-I and CF-F structured like by line. You do not get it.

- PLUGS. As some reviewers previously mentioned, you DO NOT use plugs. Ever. It is tantamount to changing a problem to fit the solution. Yes, the alternative is to project the CF coming from business operations, so that's what you should be doing in first place.

- FORECASTS. It's extrapolation by implication based on past history. No attempt to relate sales to advertizing spending or costs to manufacturing process, for example. A company is treated as an almost black box. Not good for internal startup use at all!

- M&, PE A AND LBO ANALYSIS. The way statements are done implies they are intended for old manufacturing companies undergoing capital transactions, which is fine. But the book stops short at showing how the models are used in transactions, what are the questions asked, etc.

- DECISIONS. How do you compute in Excel "DO PROJECT A, NOT B"? The book bypasses this ABC of DCFs.

- LEARNING ADVANCED EXCEL. Third of the book is Excel for beginners but this could have well been relegated to other book. We want to see how Excel is used for financial projections. First thing anyone should learn is that inputs should be kept separate from outputs, and outputs are not reports (i.e. finished printable financial pro formas). This book does not input values inside formulas, but reports and outputs are the same, and inputs can be scattered all over the model. Go find them. Named ranges are not used, cell validation (which is a way to make protected drop down list btw) appears in last chapter. In other words, the model a book advises to build is a product that an analyst can make fast but will have hard time sharing with a team - which is what models are predominantly for.

Surprisingly, this book is written by a former JPM model czar. It is the way JPM actually build its internal models? Can't believe it.

So far, will remain stuck to my Robert Higgins's Analysis for Financial Management (also McGraw, an amazingly clear and useful text) and keep looking.

The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today, by Thomas E. Ricks

From the #1 bestselling author of Fiasco and The Gamble, an epic history of the decline of American military leadership from World War II to Iraq

History has been kind to the American generals of World War II—Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, and Bradley—and less kind to the generals of the wars that followed. In The Generals, Thomas E. Ricks sets out to explain why that is. In part it is the story of a widening gulf between performance and accountability. During the Second World War, scores of American generals were relieved of command simply for not being good enough. Today, as one American colonel said bitterly during the Iraq War, “As matters stand now, a private who loses a rifle suffers far greater consequences than a general who loses a war.”

In The Generals we meet great leaders and suspect ones, generals who rose to the occasion and those who failed themselves and their soldiers. Marshall and Eisenhower cast long shadows over this story, as does the less familiar Marine General O. P. Smith, whose fighting retreat from the Chinese onslaught into Korea in the winter of 1950 snatched a kind of victory from the jaws of annihilation.

But Korea also showed the first signs of an army leadership culture that neither punished mediocrity nor particularly rewarded daring. In the Vietnam War, the problem grew worse until, finally, American military leadership bottomed out. The My Lai massacre, Ricks shows us, is the emblematic event of this dark chapter of our history. In the wake of Vietnam a battle for the soul of the U.S. Army was waged with impressive success. It became a transformed institution, reinvigorated from the bottom up. But if the body was highly toned, its head still suffered from familiar problems, resulting in tactically savvy but strategically obtuse leadership that would win battles but end wars badly from the first Iraq War of 1990 through to the present.

Ricks has made a close study of America’s military leaders for three decades, and in his hands this story resounds with larger meaning: about the transmission of values, about strategic thinking, and about the difference between an organization that learns and one that fails.

From Booklist
When George Marshall headed the U.S. Army in WWII, generals were frequently fired. They haven’t much been since, writes Ricks, a phenomenon he connects to the strategically unsatisfactory conclusions to subsequent wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Ricks was a military-affairs journalist, and his criticism of the Iraq invasion (Fiasco, 2006) echoes in this survey of the army’s top echelons since WWII. He diagnoses the top brass’ problem as being good at organizing combat operations but terrible at converting tactical victories into war-winning success. He points to several causes of the situation. One has been the slowness of generals trained in set-piece battles to adapt to insurgency warfare. Another has been, Ricks argues, the sidelining of nonconformist officers, outliers in personal habits or in their unorthodox positions in the army’s internal debates about strategic doctrine. Individual cases, such as those of Maxwell Taylor and William Westmoreland, stoke his negative appraisal of the army’s leadership, which he unifies by urging as a remedy a revival of Marshall’s methods of promoting and dismissing generals. Ricks’ prominence plus the publisher’s promotion should equal a high-profile title. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
A Washington Post 2012 Notable Work of Nonfiction

"Ricks shines, blending an impressive level of research with expert storytelling."
—The Weekly Standard

"[A] savvy study of leadership. Combining lucid historical analysis, acid-etched portraits of generals from 'troublesome blowhard' Douglas MacArthur to 'two-time loser' Tommy Franks, and shrewd postmortems of military failures and pointless slaughters such as My Lai, the author demonstrates how everything from strategic doctrine to personnel policies create a mediocre, rigid, morally derelict army leadership... Ricks presents an incisive, hard-hitting corrective to unthinking veneration of American military prowess."
—Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)

"Informed readers, especially military buffs, will appreciate this provocative, blistering critique of a system where accountability appears to have gone missing - like the author's 2006 bestseller, Fiasco, this book is bound to cause heartburn in the Pentagon."
—Kirkus

"Entertaining, provocative and important."
—The Wilson Quarterly

“This is a brilliant book—deeply researched, very well-written and outspoken. Ricks pulls no punches in naming names as he cites serious failures of leadership, even as we were winning World War II, and failures that led to serious problems in later wars. And he calls for rethinking the concept of generalship in the Army of the future.”
—William J. Perry, 19th U.S. Secretary of Defense

“Thomas E. Ricks has written a definitive and comprehensive story of American generalship from the battlefields of World War II to the recent war in Iraq. The Generals candidly reveals their triumphs and failures, and offers a prognosis of what can be done to ensure success by our future leaders in the volatile world of the twenty-first century.”
—Carlo D’Este, author of Patton: A Genius for War

“Tom Ricks has written another provocative and superbly researched book that addresses a critical issue, generalship. After each period of conflict in our history, the quality and performance of our senior military leaders comes under serious scrutiny. The Generals will be a definitive and controversial work that will spark the debate, once again, regarding how we make and choose our top military leaders.”
—Anthony C. Zinni, General USMC (Ret.)

“The Generals is insightful, well written and thought-provoking. Using General George C. Marshall as the gold standard, it is replete with examples of good and bad generalship in the postwar years. Too often a bureaucratic culture in those years failed to connect performance with consequences. This gave rise to many mediocre and poor senior leaders. Seldom have any of them ever been held accountable for their failures. This book justifiably calls for a return to the strict, demanding and successful Marshall prescription for generalship. It is a reminder that the lives of soldiers are more important than the careers of officers—and that winning wars is more important than either.”
—Bernard E. Trainor, Lt. Gen. USMC (Ret.); author of The Generals’ War

“The Generals rips up the definition of professionalism in which the US Army has clothed itself. Tom Ricks shows that it has lost the habit of sacking those who cannot meet the challenge of war, leaving it to Presidents to do so. His devastating analysis explains much that is wrong in US civil-military relations. America’s allies, who have looked to emulate too slavishly the world’s pre-eminent military power, should also take heed.”
—Hew Strachan, Chichele Professor of the History of War, University of Oxford

Present day military leadership - career before country; rank without accountability
By Nathan Webster
As Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003 to 2005 showed, author Thomas Ricks has no problem offering harsh criticism of those in power - and here, he presents a variety of lacerating critiques, but also strong compliments, of a variety of military leaders.

The overall thesis for this book is, I think, an accurate one - that generals of today are often not relieved for their failures of leadership or actions, and instead allowed to finish their careers at the expense of the nation's objectives.

Granted, Afghanistan has seen several commanders relieved in mid-stream, so there has been a move toward quicker changes...but, those changes (McChrystal, McKeirnan, others) were driven by civilian leadership, and Ricks argues that top military leaders should be more willing to fire their own high-ranking subordinates.

Generals like George Marshall and Eisenhower receive the bulk of the praise, for managing personalities and strategic missions during World War II, and being willing to make changes when need be. Many division commanders were fired during WWII, but were later given a second chance at command. Unlike 2012, a 'firing' was not a career death sentence, but an admission that an officer was not right for a certain job at a specific time.

Now, a battlefield relief is the end of a career. Ricks mentions Col. Joe Dowdy, a Marine colonel relieved during the 2003 Iraq invasion. Basically thrown out of Iraq, Dowdy didn't exactly retire in disgrace, but he certainly was not offered a second chance to redeem himself.

Part of this is the corporate culture, born in the 1950s, of the military that Ricks describes. Like all corporations, it became the interests of the leaders to protect their peers. Sure, junior officers could be relieved with no issues, but once a general was in the club, it was easier to let them ride out a career - as Ricks writes, LTG Ricardo Sanchez thought about relieving Abu Ghraib's failed BG Janis Karpinski, but decided not to, since her rotation was almost up. That's a terrible reason to let a leader remain.

The book covers almost 75 years - comprehensive, but maybe a little too much time. Some sections, especially Iraq in 2003, seem a bit rushed (though his other books cover that ground, and should be read anyway). Other sections, especially a long and very detailed account of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, seem to be a little too specific and maybe off the subject. It's a dramatic battle account, and it deals with massive failures by Gen. Edward Almond, but the tactical focus sometimes doesn't fit with the rest of the book. But, this very specific battlefield example allows Ricks to make a necessary good-bad comparison between Almond and the successful Marine Gen. O.P. Smith who was fighting on the reservoir's other side.

And, like the rest of the book, the Chosin narrative is very readable and always interesting.

There are a few surprises (depending on how well read you are) - Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and Gen. Colin Powell don't come across very well for their hesitant and insecure plans during the Gulf War (which was no surprise to me); George Patton, a successful battlefield commander, played his role very well - with Ricks giving a lot of credit to Eisenhower's calming influence.

This is a good introduction to this topic, though its scope makes it a little too broad for deep knowledge. If you followed up with Eisenhower in War and Peace, Westmoreland: The General Who Lost Vietnam, and The Commanders, among many others, I think you'd flesh out a lot of the specific stories that Ricks can only give so much info about in these pages.

Finally, Gen. Tommy Franks receives much of the harshest criticism - and it's all completely valid. He is held up as the kind of tactically-oriented general that Ricks has little use for - yes, he can manage a battlefield, but has no concept of the larger strategic goals that a general should be aware of. So forecasting any Iraqi insurgency simply wasn't his problem, and the Tora Bora hideout of Bin Laden was not a tactically important goal. Gen. David Petraeus, on the other hand, is complimented for seeing the big, strategic picture that will develop over many years.

An excellent book - not THE definitive resource, maybe, but with the history and personalities involved (I didn't even mention Westmoreland or MacArthur!) how can it be?

UPDATE: I'm just finishing The Liberator: One World War II Soldier's 500-Day Odyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau, in which Gen. Mark Clark comes across very badly. Clark's failures are mentioned here, certainly, but not in that much depth - so The Liberator would be another good additional resource.

Full disclosure: I read a complimentary review copy (and am briefly cited and indexed in The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008 for my own Iraq reporting).

An important work, low on breadth
By Alex
I anxiously awaited this book. Reading critical analysis of the performance of General Officers is an interest of mine. There simply isn't enough of it going on. There are far too few journalists out there doing this well and Tom Ricks is one of those.

That being said, I think this book merely has but one or two fully developed arguments: We should fire Generals that don't perform and that the Army only wants one type of leader and the promotion system suppresses the outliers. We don't fire enough because of bureacracy and careerism, and the system is favored towards cookie cutter officers also because that's what is best for bureaucracy and careerism. This book focuses on the Army. Other services have had critical failures since World War II, but the mission of the Army is to fight and win the nation's wars, so it's completely fair that the Army bears the brunt of the scrutiny and the criticism.

This book left me wondering several things. Is it the fault of the Generals that they are given missions that they are poorly suited to accomplish? Even with some inventive, outside the box thinking, it's difficult to see a path to victory if victory means a stable and viable Iraq and Afghanistan.

For me, this work didn't get at the root cause of the author's main criticism. The truth is that wars since World War II have been largely elective. Careerism in the Officer Corps is nothing new. In order for true performance to trump careerism, the right conditions have to be in place. In military affairs, those conditions most often are a war in which the nation's fate rests in the outcome. That would explain why the political and military leadership were so eager to fire non performers during World War II and elevate the performers at an accelerated rate. Go back even further; Lincoln would seemingly fire Generals over breakfast, he had no compunction doing so because the fate of the Union far exceeded the careerism of the Officer Corps.

For me, that is the true lesson and one I wish Ricks hammered away at a little more. We should only expend blood and treasure when it is really worth it. The Generals almost never say no to a mission. When we are engaged in "elective" war, we should grade the General's performance as if the fate of the nation depended upon it. Lest we forget even when it doesn't, the fate of the people serving underneath him do.

Scrupulous
By whodunit
Tom Ricks is a scrupulously honest, brutally candid assessor of the American military and its civilian bosses in war and between wars. He has been for decades, and at the highest professional levels. Fiasco, his courageously entitled coverage of the Iraq War leadership, has made him a hero to those who see the absolute requirement to recalibrate the system of America's war following a decade of that aimless adventure.

In The Generals, Ricks has cast a wider, deeper net that allows readers to follow the ebb and flow of high-level U.S. Army leaders through several system resets from World War II to our most recent examples. It's as if he had asked himself, after writing Fiasco: What tradition carried this bunch to the head of the class?

Beginning with George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower--the exemplars of U.S. Army top-level commanders in living memory--Ricks bends to the task in proven Ricksian style: straight from the shoulder, with deeply drawn examples, in blunt form and no-nonsense prose. In case after case--from the celebrated to the concealed--Ricks fires away with bouquets for the righteous and body blows for the malfeasant. His chapter on the My Lai cover-up and investigation, for example, will be a classic in telling it like it is--as, indeed, is the entire text.

Above all, The Generals understands the stakes in pointing out perpetual human flaws; it more than balances negative examples by showcasing one heroic truth-teller after another. At heart, it is a serious and deep study of all the things the army and its generations of rising stars have learned over seventy years, as well as what they forgot, what they relearned, what they forgot again, and what they must and will relearn.

This book is high art. It sizzles.

A stellar debut you can't afford to miss
By Nichole B.
Finally have the time to review this book properly. If you want the short version, this is amazing fiction with so many twists and turns you'll never see the big ones coming. I actually tweeted the author while I was reading, "every time I think I know where this book is going, you pull the rug out!" This results in an usually fast-paced story (at least for women's fiction) of a woman struggling to overcome the grief of losing her childhood sweetheart - who was meant to be her husband - and figure out who she is in the wake of such terrible tragedy. But the kicker is all may not be as it seems. Everything We Keep is also a bit of a mystery novel, and it's one particularly large looming question that keeps the characters and the readers guessing.

Speaking of characters, Kerry's cast is incredibly well-developed and they feel like real people with virtues, weaknesses and plausible back story. She even made me fall in love with two men at the same time...which I knew wasn't going to end well for me! Add to that settings so vivid I want to pack up and live there and you've got an amazing story.

I also want to say something about the epilogue because so many people have cited it as a reason for giving the book a low rating. No spoilers, don't worry. A) No matter what happens in the epilogue, that alone shouldn't be a reason to trash and book if you otherwise enjoyed it. B) This is the first book in a series, so you can't expect everything to be neatly tied up. C) Women's fiction is different from romance in that it doesn't require a happily ever after. You may still get one, but life is complex, and so fiction should be as well.

Kudos to Kerry for an incredible debut that has made me a life-long fan.

I would give it 7 stars if I could
By Robert Boze
This review is written by Bob Boze on behalf of Truth About Books

I’m always pleased to give a good review: Especially when it comes on the heels of two, not so good, reviews. In this case, my review rating is not good; it’s absolutely outstanding. If I could, I’d give Everything We Keep a 7 out of 5 rating. 5 for being very good, 6 for outstanding writing and, 7 because it’s the authors first book.

Yes, not only am I in love with this book, I’ve added it to my top three books list.

Aimee Tierney is madly in love with her childhood sweetheart, James. They grew up together, he protected her at every turn and they became engaged. Just before the wedding, James must go on a business trip to Mexico. A trip that only his body returns from. So, instead of saying their vows, Aimee ends up burying James on their planned wedding day.

Devastated, Aimee spends over a year refusing to accept James death and move on with her life. Adding to this are the strange messages from a physic telling her that James is not dead.

Pushed by her friends to at least start working on a life without James, she opens a specialty caf. They also drag her kicking and screaming back into life beyond her home and the caf. Here, she meets Ian, a photographer that she immediately develops feelings for. Feelings that are certainly mirrored by Ian.

But the feelings and messages that James is not dead, persist. Feelings and verification of his death that she must resolve if she is ever to move on. So, two years after his purported death, Ian joins her, as she travels to Mexico to find her fiance, who she is now certain is not dead.

As she and Ian search for James, and the truth; secrets from their past and James’ family surface, along with her feelings for Ian and realization of what her life with James was really like.

Everything We Keep not only has a unique plot, it is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing, especially toward the end as she and Ian seek the truth in Mexico. It is also exceptionally well written with little to no errors (I think I found one), wonderful character development and an author who has mastered show, don’t tell.

An excellent novel that kept me up until 2:30 AM to find out how it ends.

By the way, several people with bad reviews due to a lot of errors, poor editing and a love story with no mystery, must have read a different book than I did.

Well-crafted story
By Susan Horton
What an enjoyable story! A few plot twists I didn't see coming and an ending you won't forget. Well developed secondary characters make me want to read their stories too. I give it 4 stars out of 5 because the women are potty-mouths and the number of f-bombs increased as the story moved forward. By the last few chapters I was tired of it and wondered why this gifted author couldn't be more imaginative with their speech. That's really my only complaint, and anyone sensitive about this issue may wish to know before reading.

Rebel Private: Front And Rear: Memoirs Of A Confederate Soldier, by William A. Fletcher

In April 1861 war was declared between the Union and the Confederacy.

When the news came it made Fletcher nervous, as he was working but didn’t want to miss his chance to enlist; reaching an agreement, he began his journey the following day.

Two years later, on the third day at Gettysburg, Fletcher recalls how he became temporarily afflicted with a “bad case of cowardly horror” following the order to prepare to charge.

But Fletcher could also be a restless man and was brave to a fault, frequently seeking permission for dangerous raids or patrols in the lulls between battles.

Wounded on numerous occasions, Fletcher became incapacitated for further infantry service and was transferred to the cavalry, where he would serve for the rest of the war.

It was during this time that he was taken prisoner by Union troops, and Fletcher’s account of his capture, and the formation and execution of his escape plan is worthy of a classic thriller.

With its combination of straightforward prose and unexpected philosophising, Rebel Private is an arresting account of one line soldier’s experience.

William Andrew Fletcher (1839-1915) was a lumberman, scout and soldier from Louisiana. In 1856 the family moved to Texas, and five years later he enlisted in the Confederate Army. Serving throughout the Civil War, he survived and returned to Texas, where he later married and raised a family.

Praise for William A. Fletcher

"A neat tale of suspense … an admirable piece of Americana." — Atlantic Monthly

"Gives the best account I know of.… This Confederate Soldier shows his devotion to the truth by limiting his narrative to what he saw with his own eyes." — Shelby Foote

"He was the G.I. Joe of the confederate army.… He wrote so honestly, casually, and dramatically that no one who pretends to understand the Irresponsible Conflict can neglect reading this book." — Houston Post

From Publishers Weekly
William Fletcher joined the Confederate Army in 1861. He served with the Army of Northern Virginia's elite Texas Brigade until the Battle of Chickamauga. Unable to march because of wounds, he transferred to the cavalry and finished the war with the Texas Rangers, then wrote his memoirs 40 years later. Most of the original copies were destroyed in a fire. The current edition presents unvarnished images of hard marches, short rations and battles in which being wounded could prove worse than being killed. Fletcher describes the horrors of being a Civil War casualty as vividly as any firsthand account from either side. The author emerges from these pages as fighting less for a cause than for his own pride in being a good soldier. His narrative does more than many learned monographs to explain the Confederacy's long endurance against overwhelming odds.

One of the best 10 first hand accounts of the war
By Steve Quick
Just as compelling as "Co.Aych", this would make an incredible movie. That is certainly one of the reasons it is found on so many bookstore shelves. It does not receive the attention it deserves because, like every other book of its kind written as a participant, it deflates slavery aa a possible motive for fighting. This is the adventure if one tough, daring, funny young rebel whose brawn, wits and insticts got him through the WBTS alive. The business of jumping off a POW train seemed more like something out of an Indiana Jones adventure. If he'd worn the "blue" he'd be in every textbook. Tired of other writers interpretations and want to go to the well for yourself? This is a great place to start.

Excellent Source for the Common Soldier
By A Customer
One of the best CW books I have read to date. Fletcher's experiences reflects the true hardships and nastiness of war. Excellently written in a first person format. Mr. Fletcher seemed to be a level headed and unbiased man, and his book showcases this.

THIS ONE NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR COLLECTION
By D. Blankenship
Excellent, first had observations made by a common private in during the Civil War. The author IS NOT a professional writer. This makes it all the more valuable. The author is not writing the book to entertain, or to pass along old, gory war stories. This is a story by a simple man trying to tell us his point of view, simple as that. This account is quite valuable to anyone interested in the study of this horrible conflict. Recommend it's reading and recommend you add it to your collection. I do wish there had been more like this one.

Very Good book
By tsband
I can't read music. I bought it for my daughter whose voice instructor recommended she get a sight singing book. I found this on line after not being able to find the one her instructor had suggested at the music store. I didn't know if it would be a good book or not...(see first line) but figured it was worth the risk for the purchase price. Her instructor LOVES the book and is trying to get more...Her instructor sings professionally in Chicago and performs cabaret shows and also gives voice lessons to about 25 students and offers clinics....So, based on what she and my daughter say, it is a very good book. The delivery and condition of the book were as described. Very satisfied with the purchase.

Very Systematic
By Nick Carraway
The above 2-star review completely misses the point of this book. It is a workbook designed to go along with a college class, not a textbook that teaches you how to sight read. It is, in fact, very thorough and systematic. It includes appropriate literature and contains warm-up exercises as well as extended examples. But it is not, nor is it intended to be, do it yourself.

College textbook
By Jonathan T. Weiner
This is a college textook required by the learned professor improving one's musicianship. Sight singing is a key tool in understanding what makes the most pleasing music.
