A Gargoyle: Unparalleled, Indispensable Virology resource, but chapters are of mixed quality, flawed execution by publisher.
By JJB
Fields' Virology is a crucial resource for the virology community, and for physicians and medical students who treat infectious diseases. Fields' remains the most trusted text book on human medical virology, and it had not been updated since the last edition was published in 2007. Modern biology moves fast. The advent of new technologies, such as massively parallel nucleic acid sequencing, not to mention discoveries in related fields such as molecular & cell biology and immunology, which have both led to and been cross-pollenated by progress in virology, have resulted in huge advances. Not to mention that virologists carrying o "classical" approaches from the 1990's have also made some illuminating findings since 2007. As such, six years is an eternity, so the 6th Edition was eagerly anticipated, and long overdue. The book comes in two volumes and covers basic science of viral replication, the clinical aspects of how viruses cause disease, and the epidemiology to explain how these pathogens spread through populations. The first volume includes chapters with general information on topics such as the history of virology, vaccines, antiviral drugs, the innate immune system, how viruses enter cells, and so on. In the later part of the first volume and all of the second, the specific biology of the major families of viruses that cause disease in humans are covered.

This book must be reviewed on at least three fronts, and a fourth aspect that should be addressed is the Kindle / Google Play e-book version:
1) How good a job did the publisher do getting the product out as advertised?
2) How did the Editors-in-Chief perform their job of "herding cats" in terms of choosing appropriate authors and holding them to high standards?
3) How did the authors do in writing their chapters?
4) Kindle/ Google Play version

1) Let's first acknowledge that the publisher, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, are padding their bank accounts with this volume, at over $380 a copy, plus another $350 for online access on Kindle or other e-readers. The research to make the discoveries possible was funded by U.S. taxpayers, and the people who wrote the chapters are paid by universities and by Federal research grants. So the U.S. public paid for this book.. And the publisher wants you to pay again. I'm firmly in favor of capitalism, but this is a bit ridiculous. I hope that PLoS takes over Fields Virology or produces a parallel and superior work.
As for execution: Puzzlingly, the Editors-in-Chief and/or publisher opted to leave out many cited references, which are said to be available online in an "e-book" that readers can supposedly access via LWW.com. However, when I entered my "single user" access code from the inside of the cover, and clicked the link to access the full web references, the LWW website took me to a replica of the same pages of abridged references seen in the printed copy. The result is that chapter authors cited published research that we readers cannot identify. This is just bizarre. Plus, there seems no rhyme or reason why certain references made the cut to be included in print while others disappeared into the vapor of an online reference list that was never to be. -- in some chapters older references are left out, but other include references from the 1960s and presumably leave out more recent papers. This book came out in July and here we are in November, and the promise of an online unabridged reference list remains to be fulfilled.

2) The Editors-in-Chief, Knipe and Howley, had a very difficult job to do, and deserve much respect for their preeminent standing in their respective fields, which are herpes simplex virus and papillomaviruses. Probably for convenience, Knipe and Howley leaned heavily on other scientists at Harvard, which is where they are based, when it might have been appropriate to include a greater number authors at other institutes, or even in other countries. (While the U.S. is still home to plenty, many top virologists are also based the UK, Germany, Netherlands). Based on the deficiencies I identify with at least one chapter I allude to below, I think that in the future the Editors-in-Chielf ought to send out chapters for anonymous, or hell, non-anonymous peer review by a panel of other experts in the field to prevent certain authors from abusing their assignment to write a chapter for Fields Virology to carry out a very selective coverage of the field that highlights their own work at the expense of accuracy, breadth and just plain truth.

3) Many chapters deserve an award for clarity and brilliance of presentation, and most appear to be very well written. However, I can attest that at least one chapter on an important virus was written by an expert in the field who allowed his personal vendettas against other prominent scientists to stand in the way of his ability to write a comprehensive and honest assessment of the science. In areas of the field where this person's work is not necessarily the strongest or most influential, it appears that this author has nonetheless cited their own papers in lower ranking journals and left out more influential studies that provided key discoveries. This is a shame and disservice to readers and students of Virology. I hold the Editors-in-Chief as well as co-authors of the chapter, who are other prominent scientists in the field, for allowing this chapter with such glaring omissions to make it into print. Hence, why I hope the Editors-in-Chielf will examine the merits of sending out chapters for peer review prior to publishing the next version.

4) I was excited to see that one could pay to have access on computers, e-readers and tablets via Amazon Kindle or Google Play. It would be great to not have to lug around a 13.2 lbs two volume set between my home and office when I want to read up to prepare a lecture or catch up on clinical aspects of a given virus. However, what stopped me in my tracks was the fact that the tables show up in like 10 point low resolution font and cannot be stretched out or zoomed in on. What a travesty. And hey, if one pays $300 for a heavy, two volume book like this one, the publisher ought to include free access to on the e-reader platform of your choice. Guess what, they are too greedy and do not. So you choose, beautiful, readable tables in print, or flawed e-reader version only. Note: you can access the print version grants readers access to full version, but this not a very useable or pleasant way to interact with the content.

In summary, it is hard to dismiss this resource, because as flawed as it may be, there probably is no real substitute. That said, as a virologist myself, who has met and interacted with several of the contributors, including one of the Editors-in-Chief, the work is a partial let down. I hope that we will not have to wait six years for the next edition and that the weaknesses of the current edition (including the references/citiation fiasco) will be remedied. I'll leave it up to shoppers to decide whether the book is worth $300 or more to them. For many, it may be. For all its deficiencies, there are some real gems in there. Nonetheless, the problems with this book make the case for why many people, including myself, feel that the excessively for-profit publishing of publicly funded science needs to come to an end. I think the PLoS Pathogens model would work much better to re-invent a far superior version of this resource.

Very good book!
By Sergey Netesov
The new edition of the Fields Virology is a very good and useful book because of a lot of refreshed information about virus families, its genomes, proteins, life cycle, etc. And I will definitely use it in the renewing of my virology lecture course. The only shortage is that it is too small amount of available illustrations in the electronic format. F

Show all the references in the paper edition. It's a REFERENCE book.
By Amazon Customer
This is the must have virology text book. However for this edition the paper version saved specie by not listing all the reference! You have to go online to find them. I don't know why this was chosen as the space (and $ ) saver but it is a bad and very annoying choice. I highly recommend fixing this in the next printing. One works with the book differently with the physical edition and of course there is utility to easy links on line but I was stunned and finally enraged when I first tried to look up key references and they weren't there. I thought this was meant to be reference text book.

Amazon.com Review
The Christian Imagination is an exceptional exploration of Christian belief, imagination, reading, and writing. Leland Ryken has collected essays and excerpts, long and short--nearly 500 pages' worth--all devoted (some more directly than others) to "thinking Christianly about literature." Contributors including J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, Flannery O'Connor, and T.S. Eliot discuss such topics as a Christian philosophy of literature, success and failure in current Christian fiction and poetry, realism, fantasy, and narrative. Perhaps the most common thread among these pieces is the understanding that Christian art "is by no means," as Ryken puts it, "always religious art." If you want to make a Christian work, advises Jacques Maritain, "then be Christian, and simply try to make a beautiful work." Also of particular interest is Clyde S. Kilby's "The Aesthetic Poverty of Evangelicalism." Despite the fact that the Bible is "a piece of art ... an imaginative book," says Kilby, the people who spend the most time with it "are in large numbers the foes of art and the sworn foes of imagination." --Jane Steinberg

From Publishers Weekly
This sweeping, magnificent anthology challenges Christians to think more deeply about the connections between faith and literature, creed and imagination. Ryken, who has previously explored the intersection between the literary and the spiritual in How to Read the Bible as Literature and The Discerning Reader, brings together Christian thinkers from a broad spectrum of time periods and literary disciplines. The collection opens with a section called "Christian Philosophy of Literature," which despite its dry title features memorable selections by luminaries such as Annie Dillard, C.S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer. Other sections address issues such as imagination, beauty, teaching, realism, myth and fantasy, poetry, and narrative; with a collection of this size, it is surprising that the essays are of such consistently high quality. One wishes that all fiction editors at Christian publishing houses would read Richard Terrell's essay "Christian Fiction: Piety Is Not Enough," in which he identifies the problems inherent in creating "safe" fiction that must always be devoid of profanity, violence and sex. Other gems include Frederick Buechner's masterpiece "The Gospel as Fairy Tale," J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Consolation of the Happy Ending" and Madeleine L'Engle's "Is It Good Enough for Children?" Walker Percy and Flannery O'Connor offer strong autobiographical essays on being Christian novelists. Poetry is not neglected here, with essays by Luci Shaw, Wendell Berry and others testifying to the importance of poetry in the Christian experience. This is a rich, judicious collection of reflections on Christianity and literature.

a spectrum of insights
By Steven James
Ryken's rich and at times overwhelming collection of essays, musings, and pithy apologetic pieces on beauty, imagination, Christian thought, narrative, and poetry is richly diverse and thought provoking.

In this 100,000 word+ tome we get glimpses of what led C. S. Lewis to write the Narnia chronicles, what Annie Dillard thinks of literature as an art object, and Tolkein's view of the important of a happy ending--as well as dozens of other forays into thought on literature, reading, and life.

I found the views varied and, for the most part, refreshingly insightful. I will admit though, that I skipped some of the chapters that were excruciatingly dense and didactic. They'd quite clearly been written not by narrative artists but by academics, and despite my best intentions, I just wasn't able to plow through them.

As long as you're willing to skip the parts that aren't of interest to you, this book is well-worth buying, reading, and savoring. Just don't expect every mouthful to be as tasty as the rest.

Great Primer into Christian Authors and Writing

If you want to learn about the impact and legacy of Christian writers (good and bad, but mostly good), this is the place to start. Featuring writings from many of the famous authors themselves on writing, plus essays from other onlookers. A must read for all literature students and readers.

A Starting Place for Renewal
By Ben Bartlett
Art is a hard subject for Christian evangelicals to deal with. It seems to be outside the boundaries of our primary mission, to proclaim the gospel in the world and display and expand the kingdom of God. However, this book helpfully shows the important contributions Christian art can make to that mission.

In a series of essays, various professors contribute thouhtfully to our understanding of the role of art's various forms from a Christian perspective. These thoughtful meditations are important, because they force us to reexamine our preconceptions about the role of art and beauty.

Yes, the format can be hard to follow, as it seems a bit disjointed. My recommendation to you is this; Read each major essay slowly, taking time to pause and digest its implications. Think carefully about how the essay touches your experiences. Do NOT read two major chapters in a single reading or even a single day. Instead, approach it more as a devotional- each thought/essay is its own autonomous unit.

By this approach, I believe you will be able to more deeply enter into the meditations of the authors, which are all extremely helpful and very gospel-centered.

Take the time to read this excellent book, and allow it to shape your thoughts about using beauty and art to display the gospel to a sick and dying world.

Beloved, bumbling Detective Dirk Gently returns in this standalone novel—in trade paperback for the first time—from Douglas Adams, the legendary author of one of the most beloved science fiction novels of all time, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

When a check-in desk at London’s Heathrow Airport disappears in a ball of orange flame, the event is said to be an act of God. But which god? wonders holistic detective Dirk Gently. And how is this connected to Dirk’s battle with his cleaning lady over his filthy refrigerator…or to the murder of his latest client? Or are these events just another stretch of coincidences in the life of the world’s most off-kilter private investigator?

Douglas Adams, “one of England’s top exporters of irreverence” (Chicago Tribune), continues the implausible adventures of supersleuth Dirk Gently in his quest to solve the mysteries of the universe.

Hitchhiker's Guide to Reality
By Erik Meltzer
This book, and its predecessor "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency", are heavily under-rated due to the major success of the Hitch Hiker "trilogy" by Douglas Adams. But in a way, they're the better ones. Especially this one.
I won't bother telling the story, because frankly I cannot. Now, I've been reading this book in about monthly intervals for years, but I still find something new each time, and I still have trouble keeping track of the story. Don't let that keep you, though. Yes, it *is* mildly confusing, but it all works out after a couple of times of reading, and it's great fun from first time, page one. Besides, it's worth the effort: there's many a topic for an evening of thinking in there.
But that's not what you buy it for.
Then there's the business of the Norse Gods walking the Earth, just like your average John Smith. Sort of. Thor naturally makes more of a nuisance of himself, but anyway, the notion of everything that the human race ever chose to believe in being true, and staying true long after we've ceased to need it to be true as well, is an astonishingly moving one. "Immortals was what you wanted, and immortals was what you got", complains one of them bitterly. And rightly so. What would you do if you were an immortal, omnipotent being whom no-one believes in anymore? Chances are, you'd sell your immortal soul to appear in a soft-drink commercial. Once you accept the fantasy part of it, it all snaps in place with logical precision, and even going to Asgard becomes an accepted way to spend the evening.
But that's also not what you buy it for.
The most outstandingly entertaining thing about the book is, of course, the humour, which is more like what you buy it for. Douglas Adams is an expert for making a pun in a couple of words and leave you laughing longer, and louder, than many other humourists could in an entire page. The incredible lightness of it all is only apparent if you ever tried to write humourous stuff yourself, and thus know how hard that is. No wonder that there are so precious few books from this author. And no wonder that many try to emulate him, and fail.
Still, this isn't entirely comedy, and that's a good thing, too. Yes, the Hitch Hiker books give a couple of insights into Life, the Universe and Everything as well -- but the Gently books give more of it, and more practically applicable examples of it, even to those of you who know where their towels are.
One of my favourite examples is the way that one of the (mortal) key characters, Kate Schechter, explains how her name is spelled: "Two E's, two C's, two H's, and also a T, an R and an S. Provided they're all there, the bank won't be fuzzy about the order they come in -- they never seem to know themselves." Okay, it's funny, but there's more to it than that: it's the kind of humour you can only really understand with a name like hers -- or mine --, which makes me wonder how someone with an instantly spellable name like Douglas Adams, of all people, found out about it.
All in all, this is everything you could want: Hugely entertaining, but in an intelligent way, and not boring however many times you take to it. A must-have-read!

Adams' best so far?
By A Customer
Most people seem to prefer the more obvious slapstick of the early Hitchhiker's books, but I've found myself enjoying Adams more and more as he's matured. Many of the situations in this book are outrageous and silly, and there are plenty of the one-liners that are Adams' trademark ("It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression 'As pretty as an airport,'" the book begins) but there are very few passages intended solely for the purpose of eliciting a laugh. Everything's integral to the story, and it all makes sense in the end, although Adams doesn't hand you the answer on a silver platter. This novel is part social commentary, part Rubik's Cube (how DO those piecses fit together, anyway?), and part humor. It took me several re-readings to get the bit about the concentric circles on the eagle's wings, but it was worth it. If you enjoy exercising your mind through the contemplation of the absurd, you'll enjoy reading -- and re-reading -- "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul."

Classic Douglas Adams
By Alan Caylow
A check-in counter at London's Heathrow Airport spontaneously explodes in a ball of flame, and is ruled by the authorities as "an act of God." As it turns out, the explosion was an act of *a* god---Thor, the God Of Thunder, trying to catch a plane to Oslo, Norway. But why would an almighty god be trying to catch a plane flight in the first place? Enter holistic detective Dirk Gently to solve the mystery....The second and, sadly, final "Dirk Gently" book written by the late, great Douglas Adams, "The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul" is a hysterically funny book, and a major improvement over the decent but unspectacular first book, "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency," which certainly had it's funny moments, but was too long (and long-winded) and confusing. This time around, Adams' writing is a LOT sharper & funnier, and he keeps the book excellently paced. And the character of Dirk Gently really grows here---he's much more concise and focused, and he doesn't ramble on and on about his philosophical views & methods of detective work as he did in the first book. "Long Dark Tea Time" contains many outrageously funny scenes---Dirk's dilemma with his old refridgerator, and his surprising encounter with a young boy watching TV are both particularly memorable---and great characters, too, not only Dirk Gently but also the spunky American girl Kate Schechter, Thor the hot-headed God Of Thunder, and the vile creature named Toe Rag. The story is clever, moves along nicely, and, if I haven't made it clear enough, is very, very funny.I'm saddened that Douglas Adams never got around to writing a third "Dirk Gently" book, as I would've loved to have read further adventures of this most oddball of detectives. But at least Adams wrote a pair of them, and "The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul" is a fabulously hilarious book that can proudly sit right alongside Adams' very best "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" books, in particular volumes 1, 2 and 4. "The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul" is classic Douglas Adams all the way.

A Rake's Reform, by Anne Barbour

Charles Trent, Earl of Bythorne, was an unapologetic rake. Hester Blayne was a woman of passion whose writings incited women to stand up to men’s power. Hester set out to show Thorne the error of his immoral ways; Thorne accepted the challenge of convincing Hester that it was folly for women to defy men’s rule. But each discovered something unexpected in the process. Regency Romance by Anne Barbour; originally published by Signet

From Library Journal
When his headstrong young ward flees from an arranged marriage and seeks shelter in the country house of the notorious feminist Hester Blayne, Charles Trent, Earl of Bythorne, is furious. But Hester is not at all what he expected; and when she ends up in the earl's London townhouse, skillfully guiding Chloe through the Season, it is only a matter of time before Hester and Thorne come to the startling conclusion that they have fallen in love. With her typical wit and humor, Barbour (Step in Time, Signet, 1996) has penned a delightful, well-written Regency featuring a pair of engaging protagonists (who both reform), a well-drawn group of secondary characters, and an interesting element of Regency feminism. Barbour lives in Black Hawk, South Dakota.

SCINTILLATING!...5+++
By lark
There is just nothing like a gifted author, and Anne Barbour is that!

I was quickly captured with this comment by our rake one dawn, suffering ennui following a rather demanding night: "Good God, he thought in dismay, had it come to this? Was he actually weighing his potential mistresses on a comfort scale?"

Our rake, Lord Bythorne, just doesn't stand a chance. He's beset by a charming, but recalcitrant ward, Chloe, and has his encounter of a lifetime with Miss Hester Blayne, England's premier feminist. He doesn't know it yet, but he's done for.

This tale is just perfect - fluid, graceful writing; witty narrative; humorous dialogue; LOL situations, and a sweetly developed love story.

We come to know the protagonists so well, and they're likeable. Even the secondary characters are explored in satisfying depth. The story moves at a spanking pace - not a single 'draggy' page.

And.....it is "period perfect"!

I must be in a certain mood to read some novels, but not this one. It's great! Right up there with my favorites. I hope you enjoy it - I did, immensely.

An enjoyable romp with agreeable characters
By Dr W. Richards
This is the first book by Anne Barbour I have read, and it would certainly encourage me to seek out more of her books. This is a very entertaining story, with believable and likeable main characters, and also some supporting characters who are very well developed and could even deserve a story in their own right (Robert and Barbara in particular, though possibly also Chloe and John).
Hester and Thorne at first appear to be poles apart, but he is less shallow than she believes him to be and she is less of a harridan than he expects her to be. Even still, when they meet and get to know each other, the sparks fly in all directions! The sexual tension is palpable in some scenes, and Barbour handles the relationship development extremely well. She shows the unwilling but deep friendship which grows between them in parallel to their mutual attraction, and the way in which they come to trust each other, much to their surprise.
And when jealousy rears its ugly head... watch out!

Lovely traditional Regency with a lot of plot for a shorter story
By AJ, The Original
This book is a great traditional Regency. Hester Blayne is a radical who is content to write her treatises in her country cottage. It's not until Charles Trent, Earl of Bythorne (known to his intimates as Thorne), shows up on her doorstep that she realizes that the new "maid" whom she has hired is actually Thorne's wayward ward, Chloe. Quite the rakehell, Thorne has no idea how to deal with his ward. Since Thorne sees that Chloe will have nothing to do with his highhandedness and, in fact, appears to listen to the blistery Miss Blayne, Thorne determines that he must somehow bring Miss Blayne with them to London so that she may provide a guiding hand to young Chloe. Through a series of events, the three return to London, where Hester and Thorne have to navigate the waters of London society...and their feelings for one another.

There are a lot of secondary characters in this book that add to the story, and the secondary romances in particular tie into the story well. Thorne has arranged a match for Chloe, but she resists. He's in love with her, though, and their courtship flows throughout the book. Also, Thorne has been casually courting Lady Barbara for years. In the course of the Season, Hester also finds herself with a suitor. (Thorne can't stand it, and what is this...jealousy??) Little do they know, however, that Hester's suitor is Lady Barbara's erstwhile suitor.

I really like this book - it's one of my "keeper" traditional Regencies that I like to pull out every once in a while to read through my favorite parts. Thorne is a fairly typical rakish hero who doesn't quite know how to handle the firebrand who is Hester Blayne. Hester is pretty wonderful. She's independent, has strong opinions, and she refuses to fall for "The Smile" whenever Thorne tries to pull it out and use it on her. The ending is really sweet and romantic, and it's also satisfying to see the secondary romances between Chloe and John and Robert and Barbara come to an amiable conclusion.
