About the Author
Dr Bessant qualified from the University of Manchester Medical School (later earning an MSc (Distinction) in Rheumatology at University College London Hospitals), practised at Hammersmith Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and worked as a Consultant at Guys & St Thomas' Hospitals. She now devotes her time to Medical Education. Her main research interests are Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Ankylosing Spondylitis. For three years she was the National Trainee Representative for the Heberden Committee of the British Society for Rheumatology. Dr. Bessant was involved in restructuring the UCL Hospitals PACES course and was Course Director from 2002 to 2004, and was also the Course Director for the Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust PACES course until 2010. Dr Bessant published a paper in 2006 with Dr Gerald Coakley in the Postgraduate Medical Journal on predictors of outcome in the PACES exam.

Jeffrey S. Tennant, MD is an individual investor. For over eight years he has been giving daily online analysis (most recently at www.timeandcycles.com) of the Standard and Poor's 500 Index. He has relied heavily on the MEJT System to make his predictions, and he wrote this book because of the large number of requests he received from traders who wished to learn his methodology. Not totally convinced of this concept, but maybe in due time...

Being actively involved in day and swing trading the market for over 10 years, I was really hoping this book would provide some new useful insight to my analysis. To some degree, I'd say it did introduce a new concept, or way, of looking at the market, but I would hardly call this a helpful "daytrading" system. In fact, I find that subtitle very misleading as the system suggests a target is usually hit within 1 to 2 days and if not, it can become "open" forever. At the very least, it suggests a bias with a potential target...figuring out when and how that is fulfilled? Good luck.

Initially I also found this to be a very skeptical concept to swallow...that a particular timeframe can repeatedly predict a future price point. There are a number of "rules" that must be met to require such valid signals, which takes time getting used to and identifying.

I'd say the biggest issue I have with the system is I haven't figured out how to make any money from it. Sure I can see the signals and MEJT targets, but then what? Trade the SPY? The e-minis? some stocks? I've been unable to successfully trade these signals, mostly due to the 1-2 day timeframe in which they remain open.

I suppose the most important thing is in the first few pages of the book...as it states, this is simply just another "tool" to use in your trading. If you're looking for another "tool" then by all means, check this book out. It is a somewhat "new concept" but as I noted, tough to swallow. I

I've been trying to make note of the signals each day, but honestly I don't put much weight on them. Perhaps if there was a way to see it in action and/or successfully traded by the author or other reviewers, I'd be more optimistic about applying this concept.

Maybe I'm not being fair here, so I'll give the book another re-read soon and update this review if my view of it changed or I start making money from it.

The MEJT System (Soft cover edition)

Although I have been trading for three decades I do not consider myself a professional trader (I have a full time R&D job and I am not a day trader), none the less I find this book well written , clearly illustrated and easily applicable to my trading style. I was able to understand the author's methodology quickly after only a brief review of the books content and was able to put on a successful trade which more than covered the cost of this book. Over the years I have read many books on trading the markets and have had limited success however I find this one a real "keeper".
This book focuses on an elegant yet simple price support/resistance trading method applied specifically to the S&P 500 Index (SPX) at certain 10 minute intervals on the daily time frame. In general the authors' technique is designed for day trading. Yet depending on market conditions the author explains that a trade may carryover for a few days. The author provides clear back tested examples in order to reinforce the concepts. I find that this technique suits my trend trading orientation even in the current trend-less market (i.e. on the weekly/monthly time frame), when reinforced with other internal market indicators, this tool can be extremely helpful in entering a trade and setting targets. Simply put, this technique provides me with confidence to anticipate the not so obvious short-term market direction. Along with prudent risk management, this trading tool is highly valuable to me and I intend to apply its edge whenever setting future trades.

An outlier

So many "trading" books are written using a template: a) present general market concepts; b) throw in a measure of a risk management discussion; c) describe different type of execution orders; d) equipment to use to execute your trades; e) 1/4 of a teaspoon of trading strategies based on the same basic "indicators"; f) examples of mostly successfully executed trades. Then the book is presented as "useful enough for a professional and novice alike."

I must say that this book is much different. Author doesn't waste your time on useless banter about the same old well known concepts. He shares his truly unique approach to markets in a concise and clear manner. There are no Bollinger bands or Fibs or RSI references - only empirical evidence of a profound market insight gained from years of daily observation of S&P.

Sorry to disappoint Holy Grail seekers: I don't know that every reader of the book can instantly acquire the skills that will put her/him ahead of the trading crowd, but that is one of the reasons this approach is such a gem, else it would become useless the moment thousands began using it.

My goal in exploring different trading approaches is to glean something new and unique from the styles of successful traders and add a little something to my own style - I have certainly accomplished that having read this book, and I've added a lot more than $40 worth of market knowledge to my collection.

Dr. Scott Besley is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance at the University of South Florida. He earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. A frequently requested presenter at professional conferences, Dr. Besley is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, he is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Painful, but compelling.

I finished this book two days ago and have been a little perplexed on how to write the review. "Shut Up" doesn't have the sort of quirky or witty dialogue I usually enjoy, the world is ours and it's really not at all about the world, there weren't characters I adored or would gush over, and the happy ending is well... more hope for happy than happy.

Despite everything it didn't have that I usually find appealing in books, what "Shut Up" did have was honesty and power. Mary, the main character, is one whom I found I could relate and empathize with on a deep level. Her pain, her helplessness and confusion touched me, drew me in, nearly compelled me to keep reading, praying that somehow, there would be light at the end of the tunnel. Hoping with her, crashing with her, her pain nearly bringing me to tears--I was unable to put this book down.

Tibbet's characters are real people, and perhaps that's what is so compelling about this book. We all know people like Mary's mother, father, brother, and sisters. It makes them all very accessible, and also is probably part of what makes you feel so much like you could be reading your own story.

If you've ever felt like you weren't good enough, you couldn't do anything right, have been belittled or bullied (whether by family or "friends"), "Shut Up" is a must read. The story Mary and Paul tell is painful, real, but there is also hope. It finishes with the reminder that childhood is not forever, that people grow up and move on--even our tormentors--and that we are not alone. Sooner or later, you'll find someone who will stand up for you, who will notice you, and who will assure you that you are valuable. And that hope isn't shoved in the reader's face like a life lesson or a great theme--it is integrated in the same way the story is told--realistically.

Five stars for a compelling, honest look inside the mind and heart of a child who is bullied, and five stars for the beautiful conclusion of hope.

SHUT UP!

Well...let me start of by saying how much I love the cover and title of this book!

When I received SHUT UP in the mail I was a little distraught at how small it was. It only has 108 pages, and normally I don't even bother with books this short. I can read a 400 page novel in about 3 & 1/2 hours, so I tend to buy longer novels or I feel like I'm wasting my time and money. I mean how much can an Author really tell me in 108 pages?? The answer in all honesty is usually NOT MUCH!

BUT Anne Tibbets packs so much raw emotion and reality into 108 short pages that I honestly felt like I came away with just as much information as if it had been 200 pages longer.

I am a little sad that I could relate so easily to the characters and their struggles... I could feel the pain that 12 year old Mary went through on a daily basis, how she felt invisible some times, but mostly wished she could be invisible just to avoid making mistakes or calling attention to her own awkwardness. My heart raced every time she was running away or every time she clutched a bottle of pills in her hand, just ready for it all to end. I wonder how many children/teens feel this way on a daily basis and how many are dealing with some sort of depression or feelings of worthlessness. The reality of this book saddens and terrifies me, since I have five children of my own.

On some level I could relate to the Mary's mom in the book...her actions, while inexcusable, seemed to stem from so much stress and helplessness, that by the end of the book I felt a *little* sorry for her....but not too much. Besides wanting to slap some sense into her or maybe take a hanger to her (let her have a taste of her own medicine) I just wanted to shake her until she stopped treating Mary like some unwanted step child. I can relate to her stress and feeling helpless, but not so much to her lashing out at her other children. Unfortunately, I'm sure many children/teens *CAN* relate to this scenario on some level. If not the physical, then definitely the mental abuse.

Words harshly spoken can have such devastating affects on the life of a child/teen. This book serves, in my opinion, serves as a reminder that no one can know how much a person has endured, how much a person has been pushed, and how much more a person can take. I pray to God that my children never feel the way Mary and Paul felt in this book... I hope that they always know how beautiful, smart, and wanted they are. ALL children should be able to feel that way, ALL children should be made to feel heard!

Powerfully Maddening!

Shut Up made me sad and angry all at once. Mary is but still a child who still plays with Barbie Dolls for Pete's sakes and her older sister is no more than a bully! I can't understand why the parents bowed down and let Gwen run amok and carry on in their home like she did. It was appaling and sickening.

I know to a certain degree they just wanted to pacify Gwen because the more you'd argue with her the longer and louder she'd get. But the way I look at it is Gwen made her own bed and even once they tried to overlook that she had gotten pregnant and wanted to marry the creep father of the child, and extend an olive branch of help she was the most ungratefullest person in the world! You can only help somebody so much. They have got to do something for themself and let me tell you what...my folks would never have tolerated this behavior from me or my sibs. Pregnant or not had I hollered at them either I'd be picking my teeth up off the ground or sitting in the front yard with my suitcases!

Gwen was just a very negative person and she wanted everybody around her to be just as miserable as she was. I wanted to reach out to Mary and hug her and let her know I was there and that she wasn't alone even though I knew she was just a character in a book she felt so freaking real to me!

The title of the book is Shut Up only it seems weird because Mary never really "said" anything! Bless her heart she just kept taking the abuse, and yes that is what it was, time and time again. The words of truth and pain were right there on the tip of her tongue so many times but she could never confide in anybody and after a while she began to blame herself and wonder why she could never do anything right.

About the Author
Charles Blake is an Associate Professor of Political Science at James Madison University, where he has taught since 1992. He earned his Ph.D. from Duke University. In addition to teaching Latin American Politics, his other courses include Introduction to Comparative Politics and Research Methods. He also directs the university's study abroad program based in Salamanca, Spain.

Of necessity, by trying to span developments across all Latin America, the discussions of each nation have to be somewhat summarised. But Blake still does a good job of explaining the political makeup and key developments in the major countries.

The historical coverage extends to the 19th century, as Blake puts some perspective into the discussion. The major countries are Brazil and Argentina, and a comparative analysis is done. Both have authoritarian histories, but this still leaves many differences.

The chapter on Cuba seems to have a naturally unfinished feel. There is somewhat of an expectation that an era is ending, as Fidel Castro leaves the stage. But the chapter also can make an American reader aware of how Castro was able to harness nationalist resentment at a longtime US influence, harking back to the Spanish-American War, in order to maintain his party's power.

This is an amazing journey of one man stepping up to and into his spiritual journey. He was guided to create a spiritual wonder of the world in Santa Fe. My next step is to go to Stardreaming to see the temples of stone he so lovingly created for our inspiration and transformation!

About the Author

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University -�Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics�from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics�from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University -�Purdue�University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit and spend time with her children.

Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed� at Indiana University - Purdue University�Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored�over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently�giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

great content

Love the amount of real world applications that come with this book. This book is precise and to the point. Book is designed to go at a fast pace, if you were to work out problems in this book on a daily basis for a couple hours , you would finish the book with ease in about 2 and a half weeks. This book is the easiest read I have encountered as far as math books go. Im definitely sticking with these authors as far as the rest of my math courses go. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. If you are planning to go into calculus, I would advise that you buy the precalc book from the same authors since it has everything in the college algebra book plus trigonometry.

Excellent Programming Book for the Mindstorms EV3 Robotic System!

If you had the opportunity to to read Terry Griffin’s The Art of LEGO Mindstorms NXT -G Programming, then you know it is a great NXT programming book. Well, he has done the same for the new EV3 Mindstorms, The Art of LEGO� Mindstorms� Ev3 Programming. The big plus is, this book is in COLOR and COLOR makes it POP! It gives you clear, easy to read, in living COLOR diagrams that example and explain. If you are working with data wires, you will definitely appreciate being able to easily differentiate between the different types of wiring. After all, the software is in color on our computer screen!. I like the layout of the chapters; not a lot of reading to do, concise and to the point with supporting graphics and diagrams. There are notes and tips referring to the different software versions. He also includes some pseudocode to describe how the programs will work. To practice what you are learning Griffin includes some Challenges for you to try. At the end of the chapters there are a few activities you explore, Further Exploration, and a Conclusion (short) summarizing what was covered in the chapter.

Excellent book for starting out with EV3 Mindstorms.

This is by far the best beginner's book on Lego Mindstorms EV3 programming. Even if you do not believe yourself to be a beginner, this book will give you a very solid foundation on which to build your EV3 programming skils. It is based on the Home edition of Lego Mindstorms but is equally valid for the Training Version also. This book far surpasses the books that come with Lego Mindstorms Home Edition. It also surpasses most of the on-line EV3 tutorials that I have seen.

Good Starter book for FLL teams with little programming experience

I think this would be an excellent starting point for anybody that is doing FLL. I think the level of the descriptions and details would work out well with the FLL teams that do not have much experience with programming. The book covers some interesting things that I didn't know - saving data to files for example and then opening it up in EXCEL to get a good idea on what light level to use for line following.

One Possible Starting Point

Uses a system of a properly constructed stick figure to rough in your ideas, from which a finished figure can be built up. I find this speeds the process of sorting ideas, working up thumbnails, and roughing in crowd scenes, though I still rely on Hogarth for anything beyond that point. If Hogarth's dynamism (his trees writhe with energy) doesn't sit well with you, this big book is a passable alternative, though it does not cover as much as _Dynamic Figure Drawing_ does: things like foreshortening, the extremely tucked figure, or female [...] are not covered. A little too much time is spent on detailing small bones and deep muscles that make no difference in the drawing of what is visible.

Excellent book on simplified artistic anatomy. Takes work but well worth it. The chapters on the foot and on the head could be improved. It's also important to make the shapes three dimensional in your own work.

extremely practical and helpful

This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone wanting to study artistic anatomy. After slogging through other anatomy books,I found this one explaining everything I needed to know with simplicity and thoroughness. Not that other books are without merit, but this is the place to start. A treasure if you can find it!

Great source for beginners

I've been playing chess for a while, but never seriously. Recently I started to play on chess.com and was willing to improve a little bit my skills, and this book totally filled the gaps I had on this openning. It is not the ultimate book for advanced players, it is for begginers and casual players, like me, and I tottaly recommend it.
