More valuable for the translations than the IPA

This review can be applied to the complete catalog of Nico Castel's Opera Libretti. I happen to own most of them and have found them extremely useful as a teacher of voice and as a director of opera. The hard cover linen bindings are Smyth-Sewn, rather than glued, so you can expect a lifetime of use. They are printed on bright white paper which is easy to read. They reek of quality. Now to the content. For me, the word-for-word translations are invaluable. Mr. Castel has also provided idiomatic translations when the literal ones are a bit obtuse. This is very helpful. There are many voice teachers and singers out there that rely on IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach/learn their texts. I must admit that I do not subscribe entirely to IPA as a sole source for pronunciation. In my opinion, while IPA does offer the student a groundwork for pronouncing the words, it does not offer the means to learn the correct inflection that must be mastered if one wishes to really become a master communicator in foreign languages. So, I believe it is advisable that a singer move beyond IPA and work with a coach that has expertise in the foreign languages. Many thanks to Nico Castel for the immense labor of love that these volumes must have cost him. They truly belong in every vocal pedagogue's library.

Don't Be Shy About Buying This

Some lessons are timeless and never get old in the retelling and it just so happens that The Shy Butterfly by blogger extraordinaire Penny L. Howe is just such a book that has a perennial message to .

The story is of the titular shy butterfly who leads a sheltered life, happy in the shadows and afraid to experience the joys of the world but then he meets Monarch butterfly who sets out to coax him to come into the sunlight and find out what he's been missing.

This edifying tale is really wonderful, a feel good story with a wonderful moral for children and a reminder to us adults who get to mired in the inconsequentialities of life and forget what it truly means to be (and sometimes how to be) happy.

So besides having the charm to appeal to everybody with its directly written way, it is a strikingly well written book, with oodles of pizzazz

The accompanying drawings offset the text with their enchanting simplicity, the hand drawn look of the illustrations make the book feel more homely and a real creation of love.

This is a real labour of love and one which should be in every home, a proper oasis of inspiration in these times of worry, this is one to go back to again and again.

A beautiful book with a beautiful moral

I brought this for my kindle today. This e-book is equally as valuable to adults as it is to children. The author and illustrator have done well to collaborate to make it look enticing to children and I believe they will enjoy the story again and again. The e-book tells of a butterfly that is scared to do something different. Not until he sees what can be gained by stepping out of his comfort zone can he see what is on offer. The moral is that humans as well as butterflies need to take a step - that unknown - so that we can make a difference with our lives. The way that the author tells it will have children (and adults) wanting to try something different. It is beautifully told and laid out, making it a very easy on the eye e-book. It would be easily read several times over. As a first published book, it is very well put together.

The images in the book are beautifully drawn and painted, and compliment the story perfectly. The inside back states that the inspiration for the illustrations come from Edwards' niece.

About the Author

Chris "Kammy" Kamara was born in Middlesbrough on Christmas Day 1957. After serving in the Royal Navy, he made his debut for Portsmouth in 1975 and embarked on a professional playing career that spanned 20 years, well over 600 League appearances, and nine different clubs.
Once feared as a football hard man and combative midfield enforcer, Kamara is now the affable, hugely popular SkySports presenter who hosts Goals on Sunday and, most famously, puts in excitable weekly shifts on Jeff Stelling's cult show Soccer Saturday. It is Kamara's trademark enthusiasm and idiosyncratic turn of phrase, delivered from various wind-swept gangplanks from up and down the country, that have firmly cemented his place in the nation's affections.

As a Soccer Saturday addict and big Kammy fan, I found this book very entertaining , and, on the whole, very interesting.

The first half reads like a series of soccer Saturday anecdotes and is a fun read.

The second half reads more like a traditional footballers / managers bio and, personally I found to be a more compelling read. This is a man who has experienced a lot in football (good and bad) having played for a number of clubs, big and small, and with some great players. He has many, many interesting tales to tell. As you would expect from Kammy, he tells his story in an engaging and honest style, with good humour and apparent lack of agenda or pretence. Whilst the whole of the second half is excellent, I found the chapters covering his playing days at Leeds and his time as manager at Bradford to be particularly interesting and memorable. The chapter covering some of his experiences with racism was also a good reminder of what black players of his generation had to endure.

I recommend this book to all football fans but in particular to fans of Leeds, Stoke and Bradford and Soccer Saturday afficionados
