A Book to Dream On

This is a great book and deserves the 5 stars I gave it. When I ordered the book, I was not aware of its contents in terms of photography or writing. But with the combination of beautiful photographs but perhaps more importanly with the writing, the books actually makes you experience the house as though you were actually there. The author's gift for language, combined with his technical understanding of architecture in general and the elements of tropical Asian architecture in particular, will feed your imagination with ideas about the wonderful possibilities of finding design elements that will bring joy to your life. Highly recommended, for looking at, and for reading.

General plans & photos of contemporary homes in tropicalAsia

Architect Robert Powell, a contributor to some of the latest Asian tropical style/garden/architecture books, has written this fairly straightforward book highlighting some remarkable Asian homes of recent design. It is very well illustrated and many of the photos show shadows and light to excellent effect.
It is something of a showcase for several Asian architecture firms, and the range of style is remarkably wide. Powell gets into the philosophy behind each design, discussing such matters as flow, function, exploitation of view or site features, use of vernacular, even local religious or cultural beliefs. Each house (total: 27) has its own chapter, with several good photos, general plans (!), elevations, and an essay about the structure and what each architect was expressing. While the text is sober and without fluff, reader can find in it a pleasing sense of respect for land, nature, materials, culture. (One disgusting exception: the photo of a room in a Thai house which contains several tiger and other exotic animal skins on the floor)!
If you are working with an architect and want to produce a certain effect, this book offers real solutions and helpful possibilities. Amazing variety.

This is an excellent book (5 stars for content), but this edition, which is described as "Third Edition, Mid-cycle revision" and dated 2012 appears to be the exact same text as the 2008 Third Edition (3 stars for unclear product description). The only difference is that this product comes with online access to the e-book version and "additional resources". The only added resource I could find was errata - and this should be available to anyone who purchased the 2008 book anyway. The publisher should make this information clear so customers can make informed buying decisions.

It's Not The Work, Its the Words

At first I was disappointed when i started SEE the images in this book. But then I started to read it and then it all made sense. As with almost everything Paul Rand has written, this is not a "portfolio showcase" it's more like "Why to I think the way a do". And believe it or not, 90% of the designers need to learn how to think rather then how to "do it". And it's all there in black and white (well not really) as simple to read it as to understand it, as to make it a "second skin"
Sure the 70's and 80's are long gone, but what matters then still matters today. So if you can buy "From Lascaux to Brooklyn" or "A Designer's Art" do it you will not regret it

This book was originally written back in 1985 and was titled “Cherubim, the Mirror of God.” This was my second book following “The Eagle Throughout the Ages.” Neither book was ever published and after collecting a tall stack of rejections I took the books apart and made the chapters into a number of short books or booklets. Next I set up a web site on AOL called Unicorn Forest and gave these books/booklets away as PDF files for many years. I also switched to writing Science Fiction and poetry for a time. Several years ago I started putting these once PDF books and booklets on Amazon.com as low priced Kindle books. And as of late I have been writing new books (see the Wings and Strings four books). And I have begun to reassemble some of the early books back in the form I had wished to publish them.
This is basically a 1st edition of the original “Cherubim, the Mirror of God.” But, I have removed most pictures and added much more text to a number of the chapters and two more full chapters. The original pictures had been made using an early 3D modeling program called “Swivel 3D” along with Adobe Illustrator, which ran on Macintosh type computers. I used this same software to create all the inside views of my “Symbolism of the Tabernacle” books. The external views are a physical model and the pictures were shot at White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico. I have pulled all the original pictures out of these chapters and marked this book part 1. Following this book in the early 2014 time period will come part 2. This will mostly be a picture book made from rendered 3D models using such software such as Vue, Poser Pro, DAZ Studio Pro, Photoshop Pro CS6 and Illustrator CS6. So if you are interested in the illustrations, they are coming soon. It will be called “And He Saw Visions of God” and be part 2 of this book 1 of the Heaven and Earth series. Book 2 of this series is Forces and Faces and book 3 is The Right Hand of Creation. Both of books 2 and 3 had sections of “Cherubim, the Mirror of God” as chapters after I had taken the book apart in the late 1980 early 1990s.
Also, I guess I should note the fact that in this version of the book “Cherubim, the Mirror of God” there are some all new chapters which had not yet been written when I gave up on traditional publishing. They were planned and summaries written, only chapter 14 and 22 are new additions. Chapter 14 “My Name will be In Him” came about as I was writing chapter 12, God told me to add chapter 14 and explain the pillar of fire that is described in Exodus. In Exodus it is also known as the storm cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. This is the storm that Ezekiel saw coming toward him from the north in chapter 1 of his book. And we see it to be this complex set of visions of God when it is up close. Chapter 22 is an elaboration on the statement in the book of Ezekiel that he saw visions of God. I wanted to make it clear what visions are most of the time when seen in the Bible, sometimes dreams and sometimes mental images. However, the storm by day and pillar of fire at night as seen during the Exodus was neither, it was a physical manifestation since it was seen by many people at the same time. I think the same was true of the burning bush even though only one person (Moses) saw it. Both of these are the first face of God as seen by Ezekiel on the cherubim. Both of those faces denote the physical appearance of God in history.

I really enjoyed this book. There are alot of answers contained in this book that helped me understand spiritual questions I often asked and never seemed to get an an explaination to. There is some very valuable as well as interesting information in this book. Loved it!

About the Author
MARTHA WARD was professor of Anthropology at the University of New Orleans for 42 years. Among other activities, she taught the first course in Women’s Studies and Gender in Louisiana.� She has survived the glass ceiling and academic politics, the Sexual Revolution, two marriages, Hurricane Katrina, and the intensities of motherhood ---among many similar experiences.� She has done fieldwork in and published her work in Micronesia, Tirol in the Austrian-Italian Alps, on the politics of reproduction in the United States, and on health care disparities for poor women.� The most recent project is a radical ethnographic and archival reconstruction of Voodoo in New Orleans, centering on the lives of its two famous practitioners, a mother and her daughter both named Marie Laveau.� Post-retirement she loves on her grandchildren and her looms where she weaves in honor of the work of women through time and space.
MONICA EDELSTEIN earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Tulane University in 2001. Her research includes an investigation of spirit possession practices among Ethiopian immigrants in Israel and gendered practices in Judaism. Before earning her Ph.D., she worked as a community organizer and AIDS and reproductive rights activist in Dallas and New Orleans. She has taught anthropology courses on gender, women, Africa, and Native North America for both Tulane and the University of New Orleans and works as an anthropology subject matter expert for Pearson’s textbook publications. She has collaborated on World Full of Women since the 4th edition.� She resides in New Orleans with her husband and two daughters.

Academic text or personal expression?

Though I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure most people are ready for Ward's obvious folding-in of her personal and political beliefs into this thorough work on the experiences of women.
Ward's writing on the work women do and on the wide variety of gender issues explained in the book is certainly interesting and edifying. However, her seemingly definitive pronouncements on political and social matters are at times given without explanation or evidence. In our changing world, some of the "truths" about male/female relationships in our society she takes as a matter of course are holding less and less water. Those familiar with issues in the anthropology of gender, while they may agree with her, will find places where evidence that supports her conclusions is amplified while that which doesn't is minimized or omitted.
Despite her conviction otherwise, I don't agree with her that it's possible to express one's personal opinion in such an otherwise academic context. Inevitably, one is cheapened by the other. That said, the book itself is quite interesting as a look into gender issues in anthropology and the viewpoints of both herself and other greats in the sub-field, like Mead & Benedict. Perhaps my wish though was simply for a more academically rigorous treatment.

Comprehensive!

I was assigned this text for my first women's studies course and I couldn't have been happier with the professor's decision. Reading it was easy and interesting. The language used is simple, to the point and keeps the reader's attention. The concepts discussed are relevant, current and worth learning more about. I stepped away from this book having gained a different world view.

Lots of references to the work of Elizabeth Barber and connections to fabric. For someone with a textile background it provides even more "click" moments. Easily readable and packed with information it is a must read for anyone interested in the fields of Women's Studies and Anthropology.

Armenian Genocide in an easy to understand and personal narrative.

An excellent historical telling through the lives of people who were the history. The Armenian Genocides convinced Hitler that no one would notice his abominations, since the genocide of the Armenian people was dismissed so easily. Written without the horrific detail, but with the sadness that the survivors and families suffered. This is another book that helped me explain this family history to my child and her children.

A novel of the Armenian Genocide.

This book tells the story of the author's uncle who survived the Armenian genocide and lived to tell his relatives. It is a heart moving story of how a rich Armenian family died. The two survivors are a sister and a brother. This is the story of the brother. Few people remember the Armenian genocides since they took place either before World War I or during the war itself. One and a half million Armenians died in these events (there were several prior to WWI and the big one took place during the war). Although the story is set in eastern Turkey, one does not get a view of why the government ministers/soldiers perpetrated these massacres. The book shows how people were killed by evil men, a very simplistic explanation.

This is an interesting read. Although a novel, it is based on a true event and life. I am not sure it is really for grade school students, but could be taught to high school students.

Excellent

This was a very touching book about the Armenian Genocide. It is a story told through the eyes of a little boy; son of a wealthy prominent Armenian Lawyer that loses everything. It's a very easy to read book that was very fascinating to me (I couldn't put the book down); I was able to read cover to cover in about a week. The author does an excellent job of portraying the horrors of the Genocide, the cruelty of man, the courage of a young boy as he struggles to survive...this book should be made to a movie. I would not recommend this book to younger readers as there are strong references to rape, molestation and cruelty. However, I would strongly recommend and encourage reading this book to high school students.

A professor emeritus at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Kevin E. Murphy earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.S. and M.S. in Accounting at Utah State University. He has published articles in the Journal of the American Taxation Association and The Journal of Accounting Education. Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association.

Dr. Mark Higgins is Dean of the John Cook School of Business at Saint Louis University. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee and his B.S. and M.S. in Accounting at the University of South Carolina. Mislead, broken up book.

So yeah, it's here. But the cover is not attached to the book. Fabulous. And it's a disaster to handle. Also, the title and description both imply that this comes with the needed access code but it doesn't. I know that access codes are never "guaranteed," however, it's in both the title and description. Misleading. I'm looking into return probably. Sigh. Waste of my money.

Better options exist for much less.

This was the textbook recommended by my school, and I think most State Boards recommend it.

Thanks to being a textbook, it's extremely expensive. I read it front to back, and felt that I got either the same or even better information from free and inexpensive sources.

If you want a version that's 10% the price, but at least 60 years older, try "Practice and Science of Standard Barbering" by Sidney Coyne Thorpe for less than 20 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1407657216/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2

The only parts that are slightly more up to date in this version are the haircut exercises and several heat and chemical procedures�€”which barbers mostly never perform.

If you'd like to learn more about haircutting, I recommend starting with Scissors and Comb Haircutting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0916819019/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_15 Then, to learn barbering techniques such as scissor-over-comb, blending with clippers, and various razor techniques, check out Greg Zorian's Master of Barbering (or, Howtocuthair.tv). These are less than half the price combined, and I felt silly buying this textbook before them.

If you'd like to learn more about the structure of men's hair and how it grows, ignore the disconnected bits of anatomy in this textbook. Check out The Men's Hair Book. All in all, you can get a comprehensive education with far more relevant information for less than $100.

If the publishers want some direct feedback:

- Make the anatomy and biology sections more relevant to barbering. Don't just tell us what types of bacteria exist. That's what 11th grade biology is for. Tell us how there's a risk of spreading each one in a shop. Give us case studies. Tell us how their transmission is different. Likewise, relate the anatomy sections more directly. We need to know these muscle groups because we will be manipulating them with massages, and we need to know the neck muscles to avoid injuring clients when turning their heads. Make that the primary learning objective, rather than some rote trivia game.

- The haircutting section needs to be at least twice as big. It's very difficult to keep up with modern styles, but there should at least be some explanation of how one blends with clippers. There isn't. Changing the angle of the clippers, holding the comb differently, changing the size of the blade�€”these can all be incorporated into the existing procedures you have. The reality is that a person simply cannot start cutting hair after reading your chapter, whereas after reading other books, they can. Learn from those books.

- The shaving section is egregious. This is a problem that extends to the State Boards. We have known that men have different growth patterns and that those patterns must be followed for over a century, yet this fetish with the 14 strokes persists. Teach us how to shave humans, not theoretical dummies. If we were to use the 14 strokes as they are on a practice client with reverse beard growth in sections 2 and 7, it could cause an injury if the hair is thick enough. Likewise, a LOT of men do not have any upwards growth on their lower neck; given how sensitive the area is, it would be wiser to emphasize going with the grain.

- The price for the Kindle version should not be so high. That's abnormal, and considering how good the competition is, it's worth it for you to adjust.

I teach a combined barbering/cosmetology course. The book is quite comprehensive. I only WISH that the publishers would coordinate the segments of this book with Milady's Cosmetology that overlap to make it easier to teach both together as some of the material is the same.

Excellent introduction to 3GPP approach to WiFi offload

This book provides a thorough and very readable explanation the mobile industry's approach to WiFi offload. Yes the book is specialized and thus expensive, but I haven't seen this information in this straight forward a form anywhere else. Of course the actual standards documents are free from the 3GPP's website, but that is a very difficult and tedious way to learn the field.

The text is Mr. Hagos's January 2012 Master's thesis at Lule� University of Technology in Sweden, although the actual work was done by Mr. Hagos while at Ericsson Research. The first three chapters (98 pages) present the overview that I particularly appreciated.

The remaining 50 pages present the results of multiple offload simulations, which constitute the essential research of this thesis. While undoubtedly interesting to the folks at Ericsson Research, such simulations are critically dependent on initial assumptions and thus less interesting to me. Perhaps the thinking was operators would be deploying this WiFi infrastructure. In any event, WiFi connection opportunities seemed low to me. At least among professionals in the US, most people are sitting in the midst of good WiFi coverage most of the day (either at work or at home). It's privately owned WiFi infrastructure and handoffs are not seamless (today), but it's there, it's usually fast and there are no caps on data usage.

In any event, Chapter 3 has a good explanation of what 3GPP provides in the way of seamless handover, support for splitting traffic between private WiFi and 3G/4G and the 3GPP approach for offloading Internet traffic from the mobile core network.

If you want to understand the mobile industry approach to WiFi offload, read the first three chapters of this book.

Excellent manuscript on Performance of WiFi Offload in LTE Networks

This manuscript evaluates the Performance of WiFi Offload schemes in LTE Networks and it proposed a WiFi offloading scheme to jointly serve mobile users in LTE networks. I have not finished reading it yet, but I wanted to share my impressions from what I read so far. The presented work is interesting and easy to follow. The research problem is well introduced and defined. A thorough analysis based on three individual offloading strategies with extensive simulation data is provided.

Highly recommended for those out there trying to make sense of a concise summary of the 3GPP standards related to 3GPP and non-3GPP access technologies (for example, LTE and WiFi), the EPC, mobility management and multi-mode access network selection, IP Flow Mobility with Seamless offload which are comprehensively explained in chapter two and chapter three of the manuscript.

I couldn't put this book down!

Just re-read it again.
This book is about T. T. Liang and his two top students.
The stories are wonderful and always make me smile.
This book also holds a wonderful secret for many in the middle
on how to improve and refine what ever style of T'ai Chi they enjoy.
A must read.

Nice Personal story , no technical instruction

Nice Personal story , no technical instruction.
Tachi is overrated, I have traveled around China, trying to learn martial art, even lived on Wudang mountain to practice for 7 months.
I got my first glimpse of real martial art in a park in Guangzhou, when a kind teacher taught me, without even telling me the name of his art.
A year later, I found out that what he taught me was Yiquan, and I have practiced Yiquan ever since

An inimitable personality and master

First I wanted to make a brief comment on the one very negative review, which said Olson's book wasn't even well written. Come on, it's perfectly competent writing and well edited. I know because I spent 7 years working as an editor and writer in the publishing field, and the book is just fine as far as the quality of the writing and editing goes. Olson isn't a professional journalist as far as I know, and the book could have been written by a professional. The book is also from a reputable publisher, and they know how to bring the writing up to a professional standard if the original writer himself isn't capable of that. (I know, because I did that kind of writing and editing myself, too).

In fact, I found sifu Olson's bio of Liang quite well written and immensely entertaining, for master Liang often has a wit and sense of humor that is as subtle but irrepressible as his tai chi. The life and times of master Liang, his personality, and his philosophy emerge through numerous anecdotes, personal observations, stories, and notes that Olson took in his many discussions with Liang over the years. There is also a good deal of important tai chi history and lineage here that is worth knowing, discussing the contributions of various other masters, such as Yang Cheng Fu and Chang San Feng, and many others.

If you are already a knowledgeable or senior practitioner there might not be much here in the way of new information on how to do tai chi, but if you're a beginner to intermediate student, there is much good information and material here to further your knowledge. But Liang's life story and his amazing adventures and his inimitable personality are the main attractions of this book. Also, his personal philosophy is worth considering too. If the world followed his principles we would be better off and the world would be a far less violent and more peaceful place. But humans are humans, and so they would rather hate and kill each other than follow tai chi's taoist principles and live in peace.

There was one extremely interesting thing about tai chi in the book that I have to mention, though, about when Liang went to visit a reclusive master on a mountain, who was reluctant to discuss his tai chi. He said that all the aphorisms of the great masters about how to do tai chi are merely tricks to get you to do it correctly. For example, the statement that one must allow all one's weight and energy to sink into the "bubbling well" or kidney point on the bottom of the foot. The master said that it just isn't the upper body that is yin and the lower body yang, but that all power must come from the foot. In other words, it isn't that half of the body is yin and half of the body is yang, it's more like 95% is yin and only 5% is yang. Then he showed Liang the difference between doing "wood" tai chi and "cotton" tai chi. This was a fascinating encounter and perhaps the most telling in the whole book.

One other thing I found intriguing was when Liang had to go into the hospital at age 85 for some tests. The doctor said that his internal organs, unlike most 80 year-olds, had not shrunk or atrophied somewhat as is typical of the elderly. The doctor attributed that to the increased blood flow to the internal organs from his lifelong practice of tai chi. If true, then this is yet one more reason to practice tai chi.
