I Have Read Every Book On Cold Calling. This Is The One To Read

As a writer of books on selling, I want to keep current on what my fellow sales authors are doing. I read the first edition of this book in 1990, and was impressed then. This new edition came out, and I had to read it.

First, the author really uses these methods in his own business. That sets him apart from many other sales authors.

If you want to sell over the phone, this isn't the book for you. But if you set appointments, to make in person sales presentation...this is it. This edition is a completely rewritten version of the earlier editions. He covers cell phone use, e-mailing, and other technologies.

But the real gold is in the simple approach. I won't spoil it here, but it cuts through tons of theory, and just tells you what works, in setting appointments.

And the section on answering objections to an appointment, made me laugh out loud. Not because it was funny, but because the answer was so obvious, and I never thought of it. This book has the single best answer for every stall given by a prospect, that I've ever heard.

I've been selling and cold calling for thirty years. Seldom does a sales book teach me anything new of substance. This one did. Because of this book, I changed my approach to cold calling. And the approach I had been using had been working just fine. You'll get techniques in this book that I've never seen in print.

If you have any of the earlier editions, you know that the author knows his stuff. You still need to get THIS edition. It's a whole new game.

Good read with some caveats

The reader should be warned that this book is not about selling over the phone. It's about cold calling to get to the next step (an appointment). If you're looking to make sales without meeting in person, this book is not for you.

It is otherwise written in a very succinct and direct fashion. I read the whole thing over two days and it was tough to put down. The instructions are not difficult to follow and I plan on trying it within the suggested 72 hours.

One significant issue that I have with the approach is that a common response is to mention that your own product would "complement" the prospect's existing product (their status quo). However, quite often, you are selling a product that would directly *replace* their current method. There is no explanation about how to handle this major discrepancy in the book. What would you say when you actually meet with them? "Sorry, I lied?"

For those who never have worked on the "selling" business, or for those who see their work completely stalled, or for those who are trying to shine in their selling career, this is THE BEST BOOK about "Cold Calling" that I have seen.
It breaks the process into tiny pieces, with perfect explanation on every step, and key elements to care and truly important advice to check.
Even a few as simple as using a mirror, or calling standing up, seeming so "mundane" in practice are so important. Nothing in this book is a waste.
Truly a gem.
I recommend it, HIGHLY.

Santosh S. Venkatesh is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, whose research interests include probability, information, communication and learning theory, pattern recognition, computational neuroscience, epidemiology and computer security. He is a member of the David Mahoney Institute for Neurological Sciences and has been awarded the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Superb!

In college I was left with the distorted idea that probability theory is a sub-field of measure theory. Growing older it dawned on me that something else is at work in probability. Yes, probabilists do use heavily measure theoretic concepts, but they are guided by a different star I would call probabilistic thinking. I could not easily define what I mean by probabilistic thinking. You have to look at a couple of problems that motivated research in this field to understand this. I believe that the only way to understand probability is through many concrete examples.

This book has a marvelous and eclectic collection of classic and very modern examples. The author, who is clearly passionate about this stuff does a superb job presenting all the facets of these examples. The intended audience is a person with a moderate level of mathematical sophistication and the author has that person in mind at all times. He goes beyond the formalities of a proof and often he gives suggestive heuristics which are extremely helpful in unraveling the details. I have to say he does not go for the trivial. Most the examples discussed are far from trivial, many describing ground-breaking results, but they all are intellectually extremely rewarding. The historical anecdotes and the very elegant language enhance the overall experience.

The theory is very precisely presented, but it plays a secondary role to the examples. The number of topics covered may seem small when compared to the size of the book. However, what may seem to have been lost in breadth, is more than made up in depth.

This is a carefully conceived and produced nice book ideally suited to motivated beginner in probability. I open it often at random and go through an example knowing that it will brighten my day. Try it and you will be rewarded.

Tada! You are a probabilist!

I bought this book right after I completed the coursera online course Probability offered by Univ of Penn Professor Venkatesh. For me, it was the greatest series of speeches since Lincoln's Cooper Union address. Dr. Venkatesh's command of English, and his full force of reasoning and logic, is a wonder to behold.

Now back to the book. It is not possible to overstate how good this book is. I tried to give it 10 stars, five is an insult.

You have taken all the lower division courses in engineering or computer science, data structure, algorithm, programming languages, a little probability in discrete math, linear algebra, or whatever they do at your institution of higher learning. You can write a mobile application and show your grandma how cool that works on her smart phone. Now it's time to get serious. you are thirsty for something meatier and more intellectual.

Get this book. Start at page one. Read until you come to the word Example or Theorem. Do not read the solution or proof. Solve or prove it yourself. Or at least try. If you get stuck read a line or two until you see what to do.

Thrust, repeat.

If you make it through the first six or seven chapters like this then there shall be no power in the universe that can stop you. Enjoy graduate school. You are half way there.

Some people complain about this book not practical enough for engineers. Don't listen to them. They are just trying to pull you down and keep you from your true destiny. They are the same people who try to sell you TV and lobotomies.

Not appreciated? Judas just stick a dagger in my heart. This is THE book that blends theory and application, providing all kinds of flavors for the
thought experiments, or Gedenken experiments. All the examples are beautifully practical and thought provoking. The theorems are introduced in appropriate places, and with rigor. Sloppiness is doing you no favor whatsoever. The material needs no motivation, it is motivation per se. Just do it. Faith will come. He's teaching you probability. Not selling you a used car. By the time you are ready to read this book you should not need motivation from the author as to why you need to know probability in depth. You should just feel a burning in you chest that can only be quenched by arguments leading to Chebyshev's inequality and Central limit theorem.

Maybe the complainer had a point, as we know probabilistically that nowadays half of the engineers/computer scientists are either loafing around or producing bugs; while half of the other half are only marginally competent, they can only strictly follow cookbook recipes. Only about a quarter are good enough. Those are the people this book targets, along with mathematicians and physicists.

The same people who complained may be scared by the level of abstraction, which let me just say is not that high. If you want to see abstraction grab a copy of Spanier's 'Algebraic Topology' and stare at it for about an hour. Then open this book up again. I promise you it is the feeling you get when you sit in a hot-tub for like twenty minutes and then jump back in the pool. Invigorating.

Anyway, It's lame that some people, who have no desire, will or capacity to seriously study a book, are calling it unpractical and giving it two stars. How more practical can you get than this book. It's loaded with practical stuff. It's unethical to use another text for an upper level undergraduate probability class. It insults and short changes the students. Sure it was OK before Dr. Venkatesh wrote the thing to use another text such as Sheldon Ross or Bertseka and Tsitsiklis, but now? Why spit on your luck? And if you'r a student and find the book too hard? Try harder. That's the point. If you did not crave intellectual work why are you sitting in a probability course? He is not trying to teach you or your high school drop-out friends how to fry a burger or milk a cow, for sure. You need to dig in. It will make you a better person. Trust me. Or you could just change your major to go to MBA, medical or law school . It's more money and the books always have real world nice stories to tell. Or maybe milking a cow is your true calling.

Oh, and if you can solve the harder (dangerous bend) problems in Venkatesh's book, with 95% confidence level, you can do pretty much anything in the world, so it's a major confidence booster!

In conclusion: Thank you Dr. Venkatesh for your wondrous book on probability, arguably the best since William Feller's classic. You inspired and promised to make a man of me. I heed you.

Amazing!

Amazing book!

The book is very academic, and there are no shortcuts. Most books of this level are extremely boring, and it is hard to see what is going on, and why "all this" is even necessary. Not this book. For most definitions, the author explains why we need them done in this way, and what will happen if we omit certain requirements. I know precisely why I am reading each chapter, and why it is "right" that the underlying theory looks like this.

The author is extremely smart, and has apparently spent a lot of time studying all the related subjects in fine detail. It would probably take me 10 carefully selected books and quite a bit of thinking to arrive at what I can simply read off the pages of this book.

Even chapters with not very promising titles like appendix section about L2 functions, and Lebesgue measure chapter (from which I didn't expect much) are very vivid, and full of purpose.

I was looking for some particular answers in this book, and I now need to move on with my very dense learning plan. I wish I had more time to finish the book right now. I am coming back to read it from cover to cover (for leisure! I can't believe I am doing that) as soon as I patch up holes in the other areas of my learning plan.

Kristina cook is an excellent writer. I've enjoyed every book I've read. Right length and kept my attention the whole time. Characters are well developed. Loved it. I'm going to buy the next book and for me that's the best compliment. Fabulously done.

Least enjoyable of the series

The only saving grace for this story is that it's romantic. The hero is spoiled and immature; the heroine is wispy-washy and the circumstances are ludicrous.
Colin is ruined by claims that he was cheating at cards but instead of accepting help to clear his name he spitefully acts like spoiled adolescent and chooses to try to do it himself. Instead of proving he was framed he makes matters by becoming an alcoholic and losing at gambling until he's done in. Then he wallows in self-pity and eventually loses his temper with dire results Not a likable character! Brenna is sweet one scene and a fiery miss the next. She reasons for staying in England are too thin to be believable. The story hops from one disaster to the next and just when it appears to be resolving itself Brenna is trapped in an open tower in a driving rainstorm by a raging fire on the wooden stairs, but the rain can't put the fire out.

Breathtaking read

What a fabulous book. I love the characters, Richard, Janet, Susan, Tommy, and the crew. Many of us never take into consideration the problems and issues we face in our every day lives and how they are heavily influenced by the choices we make. I loved the inside insight of how we face a battle every day we live. I appreciated the revelation that God and Satan constantly war for our souls. I am reminded that we are advised when making choices to always choose life. Life comes in the form of a never ending all forgiving God who gave himself for us simply because He loves us and all of our mess...

Great read..Great author and can't wait to read his other books...

Great book. A little hard to read the worldliness ...

Great book. A little hard to read the worldliness in the first part, but it paints a realistic picture of how Satan is working in our world. Couldn't put it down and would highly recommend it. On a different note, the kindle version is poorly done. The story lines go back and forth without a break. I don't know if there is an editor on kindle books, but if there is they need a new one!! I also recommend the writer not name so many characters "Tom". Well worth reading.

Best International Business Textbook

I use this textbook and its previous edition to teach International Business to senior level students in cyberspace. I consider this the most readable text on the subject. This edition has been slimmed down from the previous edition, and it is an improvement to an excellent text. My students agree that this text is great.

A very good textbook overall, but one with a few flaws too.

Overall, this textbook has a lot of merit and is chock-full of very useful information, and many cited sources. However, it does have its flaws too. I will begin with the positive points as I also describe the textbook's overall features. I will then touch on the two main negative points, and close by explaining the context of my review.

PROS:

On the positive side, the chapters all begin and end with excellent case studies. The range of subjects covered throughout the textbook is excellent because it introduces just about every topic you would need to know when engaging in international business (especially from an operations standpoint). The two case studies used within each of these chapters increases the value of each chapter, significantly. It is always fascinating to read about the real-world challenges and opportunities within the global business environment if you are a person interested in this field.

Additionally, each chapter contains a "Point/Counterpoint" section that takes opposite views of some of the controversial topics being covered, which permits the reader to view the issues from the extremes. Of course, the truth about controversial subjects is often found somewhere in the middle. Nevertheless, by providing the extreme viewpoints you are better equipped to find the middle ground on such issues.

Another interesting feature of this textbook is the "Concept Check" features in the sidebars. This provides a cross-referencing of concepts being explained in one place with related or original explanations in other chapters. This is especially helpful if your class happens to skip a chapter here and there (which mine did) because you are provided a short explanation of these ideas. You are also notified which chapters in which you can find additional information on those subjects (without having to search for it).

CONS:

On the negative side, the biggest shortcoming of this textbook is its typographical errors. Words are sometimes missing from sentences, or sometimes conflicting words are present. Occasionally, homophones do occur, as well. Being a published author myself, I am quite sure that all of these issues arose from having multiple authors and multiple edits of the text. Nevertheless, it is quite cumbersome to have to re-read a sentence in order to mentally "edit" it enough to understand their point. So the authors or publisher would do well to run this through another round of careful professional editing.

I would have also preferred a stronger bias toward the Austrian School of Economics within the economics chapter (which was mentioned in one sentence only) and overall tone of the textbook since that is the ONLY school of economic thought that both predicted the current global crisis and explained its true causes. Nevertheless, the overall Neo-Classical approach of the textbook is sufficiently "free market" oriented to make the textbook useful, and they do give the reader a fairly useful description of the various economic system types in the economics chapter.

REVIEW CONTEXT:

I already have obtained my Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) certification from NASBITE through my existing collegiate credits and autodidactic research. However, I am now am working on my degree in this field in order to further my knowledge and academic credentials in international business.

Consequently, I had to purchase this textbook for a senior-level undergraduate course in International Business Operations. The authors of the textbook mention that it is also used in some MBA programs, and given the scope and depth of the subject matter I can certainly see why that would be the case.

Lastly, I recommend the Kindle edition for cost savings, speed of delivery, and simplicity for quotation when writing. (This latter benefit is especially important if you are buying this textbook for a university course as it will save you a lot of time when writing your assignments.)

This book is very cumbersome to read and really takes a lot of caffeine to get through it. I would not recommend it to anyone unless they have to purchase it for school, like I did.

Very helpful, but hasn't been updated since 2004

This supplement is very helpful for law school real estate transaction classes. It's only downside is that it hasn't been updated recently, and was published in 2004. As a result, some of the statutes might be a bit out-dated. However, it's extremely well-organized and adeptly explains some very difficult material. Also, it's much more helpful than the more current Emanuel Law Outlines Real Estate, which is way too general and doesn't cover concepts in nearly enough detail. If you're weary of the publication date, I'd recommend the Examples & Explanations: Real Estate Transactions, 5th Edition... The E&E is much more current and covers topics in great detail. The E&E might cover a few topics in more detail than you need for your exam, so you'll probably end up skimming a few sections.

Annoying mistakes cause needless confusion

Most people will purchase a book like this as an outline-style helper to supplement their casebook in law school (I'm assuming). Substance-wise, the book does the job pretty well and lays all the concepts out with helpful examples. However, its inexcusable when a book has errors that potentially result in sentences meaning entirely different things. For example, I've spotted at least two places where the author uses vendee in place of vendor. Using the wrong term of art causes unneccessary confusion in a book that is supposed to clarify the situation- especially in a subject like property law where there are so many loaded words. In short, these authors are all lawyers who I'm sure like to pontificate on the importance of careful editing- practice what you preach!

Preventing the arterial 'fire'.

I have been using the Bale/Doneen protocol in my own practice for some years and have had extremely few cardiac events occur. On the contrary I have seen marked plaque regression and improvement in the arterial health of many of my patients.
This book is easy to follow and shows patients that there is more to cardiac care and disease prevention than just lowering cholesterol, having stents and bypasses, and waiting for the next event to occur. Patients will feel empowered and in control instead of living in fear.
By partnering with their physicians, patients can be actively involved in their own care and improve their outcomes.
The ultimate complement that I can pay Dr Bale is that I have been fortunate to be able to engage him as my personal physician.
The Bale/Doneen method of cardiovascular disease prevention should be part of every medical school curriculum.
The standard of care aims to fix the house after it has burnt down, Bale/Doneen prevent the fire from ever starting.

A better way to save lives

Everybody who is concerned about heart attack or stroke for themselves or a loved one should read this book. Then find a doctor who will help them apply this knowledge to their individual care.

Every doctor who wants to prevent, as preferred to treat, heart attack and stroke should read this book and apply it's principles. This book is not just opinion or promoting a particular diet, exercise program or clinic like others.

It is about the practical application of vast knowledge based on data to improve your INDIVIDUAL UNIQUE PERSONAL chances to live free of heart attack and stroke. It challenges our health care system by showing you there is a better way, a more effective way that you can seek out, and by doing so drive health care to change and deliver better outcomes. It starts with life choices and supports those with the optimal medical therapy to deliver the best outcome even in the face of genetic challenges.

I'm encouraging all my patients to have a copy and to understand it to the best of their ability. Some of the book is technical and may be hard to grasp, but that is where the partnership with a motivated doctor will come in. With this plan, you can beat heart attack and stroke out of your future.

Oral Health and Beating the Heart Attack Gene

What a great book for health professionals, educators, patients, and anyone interested in oral health! How refreshing and enlightening to finally have an authoritative work presented to our profession and our patients that explains and documents the oral-inflammatory burden on whole-body health. Equally refreshing is the “optimal-care” platform and ideology upon which the entire book and their professional education courses, as well as their diagnostic and treatment protocols, rest. I highly recommend this ground-breaking book to dentists and dental health educators, to better understand the nature and science of inflammation and its impact on the body. I highly recommend the book to physicians and medical professionals as it explains the significance of chronic oral infections (periodontal disease specifically) and its effect on systemic disease and general health. This understanding changes everything in regards to how we approach oral health. Physicians and dentists simply must work together to co-manage their patients’ health. Patients and people in general must take more personal responsibility to manage their oral health. The reasons, as this book points out, is that oral health is not just about the mouth – it’s about heart attacks, strokes, brain health, diabetes and so much more. Indeed it changes the language, approach, and reasons for dental health, for dentists, physicians, and patients.
